. . . there is a time when quoting the entire post is useful. I do this when I think that there is a danger that the person who wrote the post I am quoting will come back and edit - or even remove - their post.

Good point about this exception. I was thinking of noncontroversial posts that get quoted in full when it helps no one.

You don't have to read the quote, its not compulsory.

I understand. Scrolling through it, however, is compulsory if I'm to get to the new material. The repetition also makes a demand on the server without adding value.

Then you have to quote only the part in question.

An example of a big quote that irritates me because the lengthy post is right above.

https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=18033559

You can built in a kind of checksum each posting so if only the checksum differs the quoted part is shown when the original posting is on the same page.

A notification can be sent to the member that quoted that the original text has changed. The option is the to keep the quoted text or to take over the changes.
When the changes are implemented in quoted text it will not will be show when on the same page.

Quotes with images which all images from the original posting is the quote not show. If only a number of images is quoted then the selected pictures are all show as thumbnails like it now implemented.

...

This is how I and many do it, but I don't think if Ohlook does it this way it will change the fact that she will come across threads where others have not :)

On the other hand, the world would be so boring if everyone did things MY WAY! ;)

Anyway, perhaps we just should consider it part of living in a society with freedom. Like having to walk through nature and see someone's plastic bag hanging in a tree, or soda bottles in the reeds? We don't cane people for it, so it happens with some regularity.

Right. I do clip quotes when replying. When others post humongous quotes that nobody needs, what's annoying isn't just that I have to scroll through to find the new stuff. All readers have to scroll. The person saved himself/herself a bit of work at the cost of inconveniencing everyone else. Selfish.

The "checksum" can also be done at the moment of posting. Then the suggestion can be made to strip the quote and just reply.

Suggested text, The POTN system detects that the quoted text is the the same as the text right above, where this brilliant posting is going to be. Maybe a plain reply will be sufficient and I will add a way pointer to the replied to posting.

Thanks for lending the cane Jake and I have put some sugary liquid on it.
