Does anyone know if the weatherproofing on the 70D means it is good to use in the rain?
I really love my 1dsmk2 because I can take it to events in the rain without a care.
My sister just got a 70D and was wondering if she could do the same, assuming she uses L lenses.
Thanks in advance.

Wouldn't recommend anything more than a light drizzle and I wouldn't worry over it too much, in general. Just pick up a couple of Rain Sleeves: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …18_Rainsleeve_Set_of.html (external link)

They're cheap and effective; can be used all the way up to a 100-400 if you buy the right length

Thanks Eric.
It seems crazy that you have to get a $6000 camera to be able to use it in the rain.
I guess that explains all the photos of sunshine.

I've used my 5D3 for a photoshoot in heavy rain. But the 70D manual advises not to get the camera wet, so I only use mine in good weather.

Yeah; but given how cheap the rain sleeves are, I just don't stress about it too much. I always have a couple in my pack; they're reusable as long as you don't play TOO rough with 'em.

I once got caught in a downpour with my 7D and it wound up with enough water in it to make the LCD into a bubble level  Luckily, after a few days in a box with a desiccant unit it dried out and was fine....but sure was scary.

The 70D is a series just above the Rebels, and to cut costs, Canon doesn't seal them like the 5D/7D series, and certainly not to the level of the 1D series.

That being said, Canon is getting much better about seals on the cameras, it seems every release gets better. The 7D2 is many times better than the 7D for example. The 80D, assuming the same trend, would be better sealed than the 70D, but until we have a tear-down, we won't know for sure.

If you want a more weather sealed camera, it would only cost you around $600-1500, from a 1D3 to a 7D2 to a 1D4, in that order.

Thanks guys.
Great stories. Great discussion.
I'll have to try the rain sleeves.

The rain sleeves are really good. I use on 6D and 70D with grips. They also hold up very well.

6D, 6DII, 70D, 80D, R10, RP, Lumix DC-FZ80 and a bag full of lenses.
