Thinking about upgrading my late 2012 iMac. Just wondering if there will be a substantial gain in processor and hard drive speed . I have added ram to this computer and it appears to be doing OK at this time . Not that I want to do it in the next month but if I'm going to do it I need to be planning accordingly . Hopefully if there's a significant change I would be willing to wait for that change to occur before making a purchase . I know the new ones have thunderbolt II which does have its advantagesis and I think the hard drives are faster than what I have . There could be some other significant gains just not aware of them at this time.

Will The new Apple computers allow you to exchange the ram (sticks). Was able to do that on my old computer I believe I ended up with 20 gig .

Thanks

The speculation is that there may be new Macbook Pros announced at WWDC this month, but probably nothing for iMac is imminent as they are relatively up to date.

RAM modules are easily upgradable in the 27" iMacs, but I understand it is much more difficult to upgrade the 21 inch models. Upgrading the HDD/SSD on either model is a little bit more difficult (and not officially supported), but it is technically possible.

There probably isn't a huge difference in processor speed from the 2012 to the current models, more of a speed bump. Your biggest gain would be potentially going from an HDD to an SSD, which you could do with your current system if you feel like you're technically proficient enough to handle it.

Thunderbolt 2 could potentially be significant if you have the devices to take advantage of it, but keep in mind that the world is on the cusp of moving to USB-C/TB3. If I were you, I'd probably consider upgrading your current machine to an SSD and holding out for a USB-C/TB3 equipped iMac.

The iMacs got an upgrade to the latest Skylake processors just about as soon as they were released onto the market at the end of last year, when they also went to 5K only on the 27" versions.

thanks people...very worthy info for sure. Can live with I got...the idea of the NEW notebook might be something to watch. The laptop could work be "strong" enough to things in a "mobile" scenario". Seeing how it is so mobile, accepts usb, blu tooth....if it is a decent jump that might be an alternative.

Have built 4 windows based (AMD) stations....youtube would be a friend i suppose if I want to upgrade the hd....then a matter of transferring data to the new hard drive.

I upgraded my 2012 MBP to the Samsung Pro 1TB SSD when I gave it to my daughter, it was a breeze. Prior to the transplant I purchased an Anker HDD docking station & duplicated my in-situ drive to the SSD.

The only thing I needed to do was re-input serials for some apps & it was good to go, it's like a different machine!

I appreciate it's not as straight forward on an iMac (after replacing an HDD on a much older 17" iMac), but it's doable on the newer machines from what I've seen & well worth the upgrade IMO. ;-)a

FYI

Went over to mac rumor and talk has it they're going to introduce a new pro last quarter 2016. Significant upgrades plus it will have a OLED screen. In the thread they had some pictures of a prototype ( supposedly).

Worth the wait just to see what they come out with .

would be anxious to see the IQ on that type a screen.

The Mac Pro line is quite dated, not seen a refresh in ~3 years, I picked one up a couple of months back with a great spec at a great price as I needed it now rather than end of the year.

As for the screen, it's ancient, I have the Thunderbolt Display, it's a great screen but overpriced & in desperate need for an upgrade to allow a minimum of 4K to the 5k iMac & Mac Pro, I run the Mac Pro in Dual Screen Mode using the Dell 5k monitor (which is actually very good) along with the 27QHD Cintiq.
