Any idea? This thing was flying around my grill like crazy and whatever it's holding on to it wasn't letting go.

Wonderful capture - suspect it's a mashed up bit of caterpillar. Colonial wasp adults only feed on nectar but they need to catch insects and other high protein food sources for the larvae. They ball them up like this before carrying them back to the nest.

Thank's so much, Brian! I was so curious. It was flying around like crazy while I was grilling. I soon found out why, its nest was under the cover of the side burner on my grill. Thank you :-)

Thank you :-) Unfortunately I have not, but that would be pretty amazing to see! The cicada's are starting to die off now, getting quieter day by day. I did come across a branch last night that had some of the eggs in it, grabbed a few shots of that :-)
