Looking for advice on upgrading from my T3. This will be my first upgrade, was thinking about the T6s but not sure. I shoot events, concerts and portraits. Or should I kept the T3 body and put money into glass? Thanks in advance!

What lenses do you have?

Concerts are a bit tricky to take photos. You need fast glass and a body good at high ISO's.

What type of events? I'm assuming not sporting events, but rather company functions, birthday parties and other things like this?

What lenses do you currently have? It makes no sense to tell you to upgrade a camera body if the glas you have could not be used on that body. The T3 is a way old camera in terms of technology these days. You would get way better results using a body more designed fo the work you are doing (like a 6D) but if you don't have any lenses that can be used on a 6D then it is kind of pointless to suggest that.

You are right, company functions, church functions and getting ready for a christening. I have by my estimate starter glass, 35-80mm and 28-90mm.

Thank you for your input.

Heya,

New glass would be better. And a flash.

For what you shoot, moving from a T3 to something else really won't provide much benefit for the cost.

Look into:

Canon 24mm F2.8 STM --- Alt, for faster aperture, look for a Sigma 30mm F1.4 or Canon 28mm F1.8
Canon 50mm F1.8 STM
Yongnuo 685

Great group wide angle lens that is sharp & fast and small, and a good fast sharp portrait lens. And a good flash that does ETTL & HSS and is very good quality for it's cost.

Maybe toss a 18-55 STM in there, if you feel you need wider with stabilization. -- Alt, for faster aperture & stabilization, look at a Tamron 17-50 F2.8 VC perhaps.

Very best,

Welcome to PoN, LPAPhotos! Judging from the event list you posted, I'm guessing a lot of them are indoors. If you don't already have one, I would recommend an accessory shoe-mounted flash. It makes a huge difference over the built-in flash in terms of the amount of light it can put out, and being further above the lens reduces red-eye by a lot. A new Canon 430EX III goes for about $300 retail. I've seen the older (but still very good) version II going for $200 or less used.

Good luck!
Mike

Canon EOS R7, M5, 100 (film), and Sony α6400
I have an orange cat and a brown cat. In HSL, they're both orange.
