Traveling to Tanzania for 3 weeks leaving in a few weeks.

Looking at current in country weight restrictions I am debating on the following options

Lenses

Canon 200-400 w1.4
Canon 70-200 2.8
Canon 16-35 f4 for some landscape work in Zanzibar afterwards.

Here lies the dilemma with the body options.

I am awaiting the 1dx2 and can take that and my 1d4 as backup( heavy option)
or
The 5d3 along with a 7dmk2.

The issue is taking more than one type of battery or charger to save weight.

If weight was not an issue i think the 5d3 and the 1dx2 may be the way to go.

Thoughts? :-)

Thanks

1Dx2 and 7D2 would be my choice.

Of course my lens line up is different.

If you are going to take a 1D with it's big batteries and charger, then adding in the 7D2 will still save weight over a second 1D, as it's batteries and body are significantly lighter, so you can't argue that adding the tiny 7D2 charger will add weight.

So on the same lines, if you prefer 5D3 to 7D2, than 1Dx and 5D3. My only reason for not bringing 5D3 in your case is what will it offer next to the 1Dx2? Not much.
The 7D2 will offer more pixels on target for long lens work.

either way, for me with the 1Dx2 on hand, and your other options, the 1D4 would likely sit this one out, specifically to save weight.

I like that idea as well, the weight difference in extra charger will be null considering the lighter batteries and body as you mention,

What would be your lens lineup?

I went with a 500mm f/4L IS and a 100-400mm in 2007.

Back then I had a 1D2 and 1D3. (talk about battery charger weight. Ever seen a 1D2 charger!)

Now it would be either 1D4 or 5D3 and my 7D2. I would be truly torn between the 5D3 and 1D4. (Actually next time I go I will be with my wife, so I'll end up with all three sort of)

The 7D2 would have the new version 2 100-400mm, and the 500mm would have a 1D4 or 5D3.

I'd bring my 16-35mm f/4L, a small semi fast prime like the 40mm pancake, or 28mm f/1.8 for the odd low light indoor/campfire shots.

I brought my 70-200mm when i went last time, and in three weeks it was on once, and only because it was lonely. I would not pack one again. It depends I guess on environment. we were shooting in good light most of the time, and length was always good.

The 200-400mm with 1.4x appears to be an amazing option for safari. It did not exist when I went, (by one year) but I would still pack 500mm as I love to shoot birds, and with T-Cons the 500mm will get me closer to birds.

Along similar lines to the Canon 200-400mm, I might be tempted depending on circumstances to use a SIGMA 120-300mm f/2.8.

Interesting, my trip includes some time with the Maasai so that was the reason for the 70-200. I may take the f4 70-200 non is instead to save weight.

I am taking my canon 200-400 w1.4 so that should cover longer ranges and I'm taking an additional 1.4 also.

I didn't think of the 40mm but I have one and it's a great idea.

Still debating between the 1d4 and the 7d2.
