Hello there. I recently had a 24-105mm and 70-200 f4IS stolen, though fortunately my 5D3 and 50L were with me, along with a 17-40. My question is what to replace them with. I found myself almost exclusively shooting with a 17-40 and the 50L recently which makes me think that I should replace the two stolen with a 35IS and the 135L (a lens I've always wanted) rather than go for zooms.

I mainly shoot landscape and family portraits and whilst the 24-105 was an excellent allrounder, I simply get more fun out of the 50L, which I put down to big aperture, size and picture feel. The 70-200mm sat in the drawer more often than not, so I won't be replacing that but feel the 135mm would cover reach if needed and add an excellent portrait alternative. 35mmIS would add a slightly wider alternative and give me some IS when needed.

Any thoughts, particular likes, alternatives or things I may miss?! Open ended I know but interested in people's views...

Thanks!

There is a new 24-105 L supposed to come out with the 5D4 in the fall. I would grab the 135L now and wait until then or look at the 24-70/2.8 II or the Tamron VC version now

Canon 7D/350D, Σ17-50/2.8 OS, 18-55IS, 24-105/4 L IS, Σ30/1.4 EX, 50/1.8, C50/1.4, 55-250IS, 60/2.8, 70-200/4 L IS, 85/1.8, 100/2.8 IS L, 135/2 L 580EX II, 430EX II * 2, 270EX II.

It's hard to say if those lenses will work for you or not without a deeper look at specifics of what you were shooting with what you had, and why.

You don't give any reasons for what you are looking for from the 35IS. This lens overlaps with your 17-40, so we need to know if you are looking for some specific performance difference, a faster aperture, or just a smaller lens to use at 35mm specifically. Then we could give some idea if the 35IS is likely to be a good choice for what you are looking to get out of it.

As for the 135L, I guess the biggest question would be to ask why you didn't use the 70-200 you had. If you had no real use for a medium telephoto, then a 135mm prime is going to be just as useless to you.

Sometimes the things we shoot and the way we approach a subject will be limited by the lenses we have, in which case a new or different lens will open up new opportunities. But other times we already have the lenses we need, and a new or different lens has to be considered strictly by what it can do differently from what we were using. Sometimes a faster lens will really change things up (when we were really limited by the max aperture we had), but other times it will not.

I think you will find the 35mm and the 50mm too close to each other. My advice? 35L II and 135L seems perfect at least to me ;-)a

Heya,

Stick with what you have, and wait?

You could always replace the 17-40 with a 16-35 F4L IS and have one less lens, but have a really good one that has ultrawide and 35mm covered with IS too. Keep the 50L, you like it. And then if you feel the need for a longer lens, the 135L will always be a great lens to try, you can always sell it if it collects dust for you, or you could consider a Tamron 85 F1.8 VC (stabilized telephoto prime) too if you want one with stabilization.

Very best,

Wissigle, i think your plan sounds great.

I don't think that having a 35 and 50 is too close at all.

Now there's an idea worth considering! I will put some serious thought into that one, I hear the 16-35IS is awesome.

Maybe I have been doing this too long. (Close to 50 years.)
I would replace any lenses I had stolen with the exact same ones. Bodies, I might buy the latest versions.

Like Tapeman said above.
I certainly would replace the 70-200 f/4 L IS yesterday with the same. Smaller, lighter, equally impressive to the larger, heavier f/2.8 L IS Mark II.......I have both AND use both. When f/2.8 is not needed, the f/4 L IS is at work.
It's that good........but you knew that..............
