We went looking for Black-backed Woodpecker nests, in an area where we had seen them earlier this spring. We didn't find a nest, but did see five of this uncommon species. We also picked up a cooperative Wilson's Snipe on the way in.

There will be days when you get the shot(s) you missed days, months or years before.

Very nice Al, I love the king of the stump pose that snipe is striking. Can't wail to get back in the field myself. In the mean time thanks for the fix

These are awesome Al, but I want to see more...especially of the Black Backed Woodpecker! I would love to see one of them one day!

Fantastic captures!

Thank you all for your kind comments; I appreciate your taking the time. As for seeing more black-backs, my birding buddy went back to the same area a few days after this photo was taken and thinks she has an active nest spotted. We found it earlier this spring, but no additional work had been done on it. When she saw it again, the male was actively excavating and so we are hopeful. If it continues to materialize, we'll have a ring side seat as the cavity can be photographed from a nearby roadway, right from the vehicle.

Beautiful shots both, Al! Love the black backed woodpecker, I've also never seen one of those myself. You have a knack for getting these shots in absolutely perfect settings. :-)
