Photoshop Actions Question

I'm just getting started with Actions in Photoshop (really should have started using them a long time ago). As the last part of one I'm saving a jpg, and instead of simply saving it as "IMG_4663.jpg" it saves the file as "IMG_4663 copy.jpg". That filename wasn't previously used - I could understand if Photoshop were keeping me from overwriting an existing file but that's not the case. Is there a way around that?

Are you using layers?

Why not put in a Stop when the Save dialog box opens so that you can correct the filename?

Are you using layers?

In these particular files there are only a couple of adjustment layers.

Why not put in a Stop when the Save dialog box opens so that you can correct the filename?

Yes, I could put in a stop but that would have slowed down the process. At this point I've finished with this group of photos and I'm just hoping to figure this out for future use.

It is probably because you are not flattening the image before you save it. It might also depend on which version of Photoshop you are using.

Are you seeking quantity over quality?

In my feeble little brain it shouldn't be one or the other. If you manually save as a jpg it's no issue, it defaults to "IMG_3653.jpg". What's bugging me is why it wants to add the " copy " when doing the exact same thing with an action.

Saving using actions can be a bit clumsy. I urge you to explore Image Processor (In the File>Scripts menu) instead. It's very robust and useful.

Assuming that your color space in PS is ProPhoto, as it should be,...your first step would be to convert to sRGB, at which point there
should be adjustment layers added to assure maximum IQ. There is no "one size fits all" for those layers.

When I determine that a ProPhoto image is to be displayed, electronically or printed, it's simply to make a duplicate and rename.

Take a look at the Save... dialog in your action - when you save a file with layers as a JPEG, the "As a copy" checkbox is automatically selected and grayed out so you cannot unselect it.

Use Image Processor Pro -

and

tutorial video: http://av.adobe.com …wn/ImageProcessPro_SM.mov (external link)

it will permit you to save multiple versions of the working file in various formats and in each format (JPEG, TIFF, PSD) you can specify an action to run prior to save, as well as specify the final output size. With this approach, you could automate the process of saving your full edit stack as a PSD, a full-res, flattened copy in a larger color space (say for print) as TIFF and a small version, in sRGB as a JPEG.
