I was wondering if anyone had tried to widen the 7mm umbrella holder to a more universal 8mm? I have umbrellas that don't fit the holder and would like to be able to use them with the 600 and also not have to worry about sizes when looking for new modifiers. I was thinking an easy fix would be to simply drill out the holder an extra mm but not sure if I would damage the plastic enough to where it might crack in doing so.

Has anyone tried this fix and if so how did it work out? I've seen posts of people trying to shave down the shafts themselves but was wondering if this more "universal" approach would work.

Thanks,
Kevin

I don't understand this at all. The guy at rovelight calls the rove's umbrella holder 8mm. He says the umbrellas shaped like a hexagon or octagon may not fit though as edge to edge it's more than 8mm (even though the umbrella is sold as 8mm). I am miffed by this because I have two westcotts that don't fit my rove, so even though I didn't need it I picked up a new interfit hoping it would fit, and it didn't. I was told by the guy at rovelight that all the umbrellas he tried in his office fit so I figured I had a good chance. Guess not.

I have a Westcott umbrella and softbox as well and they don't fit the Rovelight either and that's the problem I was trying to solve. That and not having to worry about the size of future umbrellas which can be a pain since most don't specify their shaft diameter. I've read that some people say that some of those 8mm umbrellas fit "snuggly" but I can't get any of mine to fit at all. So if anyone has any specific umbrellas they use with the Rovelight that work I'd appreciate if they'd post those as well.

However if you're looking for an umbrella style octobox that DOES fit the Rovelight, MalVeauX turned me on to these:

They are 47" and 32" respectively. I have the 47" which does fit the Rovelight and assume the 32" would as well.

I have been told all the Plm buff stuff fits, just never get around to getting any because the shipping charges bug me. I was also told that the glow series from adorama fits too, but unfortunately I didn't grab one of those instead of the interfit. I'm guessing it's just the hexagonal or octagon shaped shafts that is the problem?

My westcott 60 and impact 60 inch umbrellas fit. It's snug, but it fits.

Whatever the spec size of the 600B umbrella receiver, it definitely doesn't fit all 8mm shafts. I treated it as 7mm. My PCB PLM fit perfectly.

I might have to check out the PCB's. I see that Interfit (which I guess is in the "Glow" brand line-up) also has a 7mm shaft as well. Elinchrom has some also since it's my undertstanding that they too have a 7mm holder on their strobes. I guess it wouldn't be THAT hard to get an umbrella for it but it's just frustrating to have to try to find out if a modifier has that 7mm since it some don't state that clearly a lot of times.

I've tried putting my Westcott umbrella on but it doesn't fit even snugly. I can barely start to get it in but not even enough to clamp it down. It does seem that hex/octagonal shape of the shaft does add just that little bit that won't allow it to fit (hence the 8mm I guess).

Thanks for the recommendations.

Kevin
