I am posting in a Sony-dedicated forum, so I am likely to get biased opinions, but that's fine with me. Generally speaking, I want to be talked out of this idea anyhow!

Has anyone considered moving from Sony, an A7ii in my case, over to m43? I am really attracted to the Olympus OM-D E-M1 body and a few of their lenses (12-40, 40-150, 25, and 45). The lenses are all well regarded, and from a size and cost perspective pretty attractive to me.

Currently I have an A7ii, 55 f1.8, 28 f2, and manual Canon 70-210 f4. If I were to transition, I could roughly replace this setup cost-wise with the E-M1, 12-40, 25, and 45, keeping the 70-210 for now and adding the 40-150 in the future. If I do stay with the Sony system, I will soon add the new 70-300 or 70-200 f4.

My biggest concerns would be ISO performance, DoF capabilities, and 16 vs 24 MP (cropping). Thoughts from people that have considered both systems or moved from 1 to the other?

Thanks in advance, John

Larger sensors have inherently lower noise than smaller sensors, if both have the same total pixel count...so why go from FF sensor to the much smaller 4/3 format?!

What are your reasons for considering moving to m43? What are you hoping to gain from it? I think it's a really strong system, and if it fits your wants/needs, then it could be a great move. But you list concerns about ISO and DOF (I'm assuming you want shallow), which makes me think m43 is not for you. Once you start considering the Oly pro line lenses, you sort of toss size/weight advantages out the window.

My primary reason would be to further reduce size, especially with a couple of the zooms I would get either immediately or in the future. But in any event, I've decided based on feedback here and elsewhere that I am overthinking this and will stay with Sony. Thanks for the input.

I used to own E-M1, and its my favorite camera of all time, but I sold it... Camera is amazing, but the sensor was/is its downfall.

It's not just 16mp vs 24mp, Olympus cramps in a lot more pixels in tiny sensor, noise performance will suffer.

I had a full OMD M5 system, camera, grip, lenses. I traded it in on a Sony a6000 before the a6300 came out. My M5 didn't focus well on moving subjects.
Parts fell off as well.
I rejected the idea of spending money and upgrading to an M1 body

Images were excellent provided the subject didn't move.

I kept my system for over 2 years. It didn't hold value well. I received $475 for equipment that cost me over $2,000.

Why did I wait so long? It was an expensive mistake.

I used to have a photo business, in film days. I read everything I could about the camera, trying to find a fix that would produce good photos of moving subjects.

good luck

Dave
