I like the color version a bit better - part of the reason being that there is too much of a tonal merge in the hair, so you lose more detail there in the B&W.

I think your lighting is arranged well for a portrait, but the sidelighting is a bit too strong and is washing out in the right temple, the right ear and right neck and collar-bone.

If you would like to try bringing the sidelight just a bit more towards the front and raise it higher and take it further from the subject to cool it down a bit, I think you will get closer to what you want.

I think the lighting is too harsh. The face darker than the body. Try and not pose him like a footballer ie turn the head to the side.
