I was slowly driving around the beach parking lot at a local managed prairie (Richard Bong Rec Area in Kenosha county WI), looking for birds but not seeing much, taking photos of flowers, when I came across this Spotted Sandpiper right next to the road. I grabbed the camera and prayed: "Don't fly away!"

I haven't seen one this year yet, so that was exciting. Then I noticed the little ones. Three of them!

I've never seen little ones and I don't know why, but I was surprised that they shake their rumps too. :-P I watched them for 5 minutes while they slowly worked their way into the weeds and went out of sight. I hoped they might come back out, so I waited some more. I saw some movement right next to the road, it looked like goose down feathers moving in the wind ... NO! It was an even SMALLER baby! He was so young that he could barely walk with those huge feet and he still looked wet, like he had just recently hatched.

Oh no! Did he get left behind? No, his mama came back out shortly. She could hear him calling and came looking for him, so I knew every thing was alright and it was time for me to leave. Here's a short video clip of them that I took in between the still shots, you can see the little ones shake their rumps:

What a spectacular find! Having those shots is really nice. The only shorebird that nests around me are Killdeer.

Zach--C&C is welcome on my photos
