ive "shot" some video of a local rock band and while the video is very good (considering how its shot on a 5d3 blah blah blah) but the audio leaves a LOT to be desired...

i looked on B&H and there was a pretty good listing of mics and a little discussion on all of their offerings but it was rather overwhelming...

i dont plan on shooting a lot of video but it would be nice to have a fairly decent mic to use that doesnt cost and arm and a leg...

any suggestions?

-im just trying. sometimes i succeed

I shoot for a band, but it's the high school marching band. The mic I use is the RØDE VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Mic with the DeadCat (I don't make up the names). Together, B&H sells it for $220; mic only is $200. The DeadCat is needed only if you're in windy conditions.

It's a directional mic that has good frequency response and does a decent job of filtering peripheral sounds. Below is a training video from the 5DM3 and the RØDE mic, shot at 1080p all down the 50 yd line but zoomed for detail. The mic is mounted on the hot shoe, also pointed down the 50 yd line. It was windy. Regardless, you get to hear the range of sound.

Hope this helps!

UPDATE:

Embedding the video didn't work, so here's a link to the video. Please let me know if it doesn't work.

I used a Roede Stereo Videomic in the past and it is very nice - but obviously picks up a lot of background noise being a stereo microphone. (Also maintains the stereo sound.)
In general, the Roede microphones are a very good choice.

I think Sennheiser has 1 or two dedicated models too.
One decision you will need to make is what you want to record - a specifc sound or the ambient sounds too. The first needs a directional microphone, the latter a stereo microphone.
In addition, if you seek the best audio quality you should consider using an external audio recorder - but I cannot help you there with recommendations.
