trip to Iceland - what lenses to bring?

I'm sure people here have plenty of photography ventures out into Iceland... do i need to bring my 70-200? I was thinking of traveling a bit light and just taking my 16-35 and 24-70, along w/ a 50 prime. any and all advice is appreciated, even if it's just a reminder to floss daily.

I've got 2 weeks to take in April '17 and am considering Iceland, just don't know if it's a good time to go. Any recommendations?

I'm also curious to know if a 70-200 is necessary. Heading to Iceland in August. I'm also debating on leaving the 17 TS-E.

Bodies for wife and I:

5DSR, 5D2, 7D2

Lenses:

Prefer to bring any of the 2, 3 at most.
2 X 24-70 or 17-40 or 17TS-E

We have 70-200 2.8 & f/4, should I bring the f/4?

Ive been to Iceland twice now and all I would bring the next time is 70-200 and 24-70. You'd be amazed at the amount of times you'll want some reach. A 16-35 may be fun to get real close to some things (Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss) but with a 24-70 I wouldn't find it necessary. My last trip I actually went with a 70-200 and a 35 prime and was happy with that choice. I did bring a fisheye but never used it.
But I definitely wouldn't leave behind the telephoto

If you're looking for aurora pictures, I would suggest a wide angle though I did get some great shots using the telephoto end of my 24-105 since it was on the horizon rather than above.

just got back last night... what an utterly amazing country. other than the cost of doing stuff, I had an immensely great time. i wasn't over there just to photograph landscapes (though some obviously were... i did see a small horde of tripod-wielding photogs at Gullfoss at midnight). the real reason was that my wife, a bunch of friends and myself were gonna to a music festival that got canceled about two weeks before it was due to start.

i ended up bringing:

5D3 w/o a grip
50 mm f/1.4
16-35 f/2.8
24-70 f/2.8
135 f/2
1.4 TC


i used the longer lens more than i expected to, esp to take landscape photos of distant mountains to make into a panorama. i only used the 50 to shoot a couple of bands who played anyway despite the cancellation, and i'd say that the majority of my shots were w/ the 16-35.

i'd definitely like to get back there.

I am packing as we speak for a trip to Iceland later this week as well.
Camera gear wise I do pack heavy. Although after my last trip to Venice and Florence a few months ago I will be lighting the load of the bag somewhat.
Along with a pair of Gripped 5D Mark III's, this trip I am taking my "Greek Trilogy of the Canon f/4 L IS"
The 16-35 f/4 L IS, the 24-70 f/4 L IS and the 70-200 f/4 L IS.
After returning from Italy with my two gripped bodies with the first two lenses above along with the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS Mark II, and sore shoulder and back as well, I decided I am bringing my smaller, lighter, equally impressive 70-200 f/4 L IS. If /4 was good enough for the 16-70 range, why not continue through to 200.......
Why beat myself up when I have a lighter solution?
I know for the images I see out there, a 70-200 is always needed.
If the smaller f/4 L IS was not in my Arsenal to choose from, then yes I would bring my 70-200 f/2.8 L IS Mark II.
I would be kicking myself if I did not........the entire time.

that sounds like a good collection to bring. if you've got a travel tripod, that would come in handy as well.

Funny you say that Narlus as I forgot to mentioned that. Yes I do and will throw in the suitcase a MeFOTO Globetrotter Carbon Fibre.
Bought it a few years ago for a trip to Paris and Dublin. Used in conjunction with my 24 TS-E Tilt/ Shift and all the others lenses above including the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS Mark II.
It really supports the gear very, very well with confidence.
Since then it has been "Globetrotting" with me as well.
