9 year old daughter looking for camera like daddy! 30D, 40D, t2 or t3? (starter DSLR)

My 9 year old wants to move into the DSLR camera's. She has been saving up her money and has 100 to spend. I was hoping to find her a 30D maybe or a t2 or t3 to get her started on. I have some kit lenses that I would let her use. Let me know what you got so I can get her one this summer! Thanks in advance... Cole

I have a MINT Canon T3 that I purchased for my daughter thinking that she would like to do youtube videos. That lasted for a couple of months, then she moved on. Been sitting in her closet for the last year and a half.

Just a thought, I let my daughter play with my cameras and ultimately she always goes to my EOS-M. It's small. It's a touch screen. It's LCD Live View lets her look at things, and touch it to take an image--just like a phone. It's so easy that a 2 year old can do it. She happens to be 2 years old, turning 3 now. Point being, if you think about it, today's youth will be using touch screens and other such business more and more. If you want her to keep up with it, it may pay off to have more modern features that are similar to what she will experience elsewhere, such as with tablets & smart phones. The latest dSLR's have live view & touch screens. But, an EOS-M can be had for dirt cheap these days. $200 gets you the EOS-M and a 22mm F2 pancake often enough, and you can choose between some colors if you look around. Small for small hands. Works just like a smart phone if she wants it to. Can be a full manual camera if she wants to go that route.

So I'd look at the T4i, T5i, EOS-M, etc. You can usually find them around $200 (EOS-M)~300(T4i). I know it's more than your original budget, but again, the idea being the touch screen and LCD and all that. Again, just like today's smart phones & tablets.

I totally appreciate your daughter saved up to buy a camera. Maybe you can go halfsies on it. Unless she is already the kind of kid that absolutely likes clunky dSLR image making, it's worth considering something with modern features that she will already be super familiar with.

I have a 20D I'm trying to get rid of.

What kind of shooting? If it is general purpose stuff with small lenses, a DSLR would be fine. But if she wants to do birding or work with long lenses like my son does, then a super zoom may be a better idea. I got my son a SX50HS and while it has its limitations, it is really light and has allowed him to get great bird shots while being able to carry it all say without getting tired.

a 30D would be massive for a 9 year old...... get an EOS-M, better learning tool with WYSIWYG exposure, and the touch screen is good.

EOS M might be a good option (I have one myself, and the 22mm f2 is amazing), but it doesn't really present the same experience as a typical DSLR. It's closer to the usage of a point and shoot. My daughter always wants to look through the viewfinder instead of composing on the LCD, for example.

The camera that came to mind for me is the SL1. It's a DSLR, but at a size that is perfect for smaller hands. You can pick up one from Canon refurb for $330 right now with an 18-55. Canon occasionally offers 10-15% off sales on their refurb equipment, dropping the price even further. That's more than your $100 budget, but you might be able to find one used on Craigslist for close to that.
