Thought it might be useful to have a thread that members can search so see how much it might cost to repair a camera, lens or other equipment. I'll start.

I dropped my 5d2 with a 50l on it a few weeks back about 8 feet onto concrete.

Only major damage was the battery grip - completely trashed.

5d2 - working fine with a little scuff.

50l - perfect

Lens hood - torn up

I know this thread is about repair costs but just wanted to say holy hell I lucked out.

Geez - where do i start.
In no particular order.

Had 1d2/16-35/580ex grabbed off my shoulder - would be thief dropped it then ran empty handed.
Body ok, flash had broken hotshoe, 16-35 broke just in front of the mount.
$400 repair

Had 400 f2.8 and 1D4 roll off the back seat into the footwell when i stopped suddenly.
Tweaked the locking pin so it wouldnt retract and i couldnt seperate lens and body.
Unknown repair cost

Had a bunch of security goons take 1d2 off me after i took a pic of their boss.
Boss grabbed one by the strap (potn/optech strap) and swing it around.
Body ok - flash hotshoe broke and launched the flash about 5m up and 10m across.
Flash still worked but battery door was damaged.
Unknown repair costs

Flash hit by netball.
Metal camera hotshoe broken, flash ok
$35 for new part (i fitted it, actually substituted the hotshoe off my personal mk2n)

Mk4 unlocked itself from a 300f2.8 and fell to the ground, hitting hotshoe first.
Camera seemed to work ok to finish the job, but the AF point display appeared as though they were all smooshed up into one corner.
New mirror box and top plate - unknown repair cost

Mk2N (my camera, not a work owned one)
Blown shutter at 52,000 clicks, 2 weeks out of warranty.
Replaced under warranty.

Mk2N
Blown shutter after a hard life working at a newspaper
Unknown repair cost

Thats all i can remember for now.

I've been shooting Canon for about seven years. Most of my cameras have been mishandled/dropped (carpet) by my grandson. I dropped my 135L onto a basketball court from waist-high. The only broken/non-functioning gear I've ever had is the 70D I bought directly from Canon. Repair cost: unknown. Canon refused to acknowledge that camera had a problem.

Not a repair exactly, but a check-up on a bought-used Canon tc 1.4 II that seemed to cause blur on my 300 f4L - the tc was within specs, combo needed MFA-ing (which I did, not Canon) I sent the tc in by itself.

Check-up cost - $90 Canadian + postage.

Canon 5D converted for IR.
- non functioning (totally dead) shutter button

Cost of repair:
- $7.99 for a bottle of 99% pure alcohol*

I did the "pour alcohol into camera" trick - it's all over the web and youtube

It worked. Perfectly. Shutter button completely fixed.

Side note: reason for failure:

I am tripoded and using a remote 100% of the time with this camera. The shutter button NEEDS to be activated to stay limber and to stop it from gumming up.

* - Do NOT use the usual retail alcohol with less alcohol content. It must be the pure stuff. You may not be able to find it retail. I could not. But it is available from online sellers such as amazon.

Denatured alcohol works very well for any type of cleaning around electronics. I've used it for years without issue.
