Not a malfunction I'm afraid, the 5D2 was the first "real" camera I've owned, and the shutter sound drove that point in well.
It's not the loudest camera I've owned since then, but for avenues where silence is key, you really need to look into cameras where appropriate features are provisioned.
APS-C cameras are naturally quieter than ones with larger sensors (and thus mirrors/shutters) if you want to stick with SLRs, or go with a mirrorless camera where there is no mirror to flap about, and many also feature a fully electronic shutter for zero sound. As mentioned, live-view is quiet on any camera, but is generally clunky to use on SLRs.
Lastly is the old-fashioned approach - if you don't want to sacrifice performance for sound - and that is getting a sound blimp, which is a cover for your camera that dampens the sound by isolating it from everything else. Unfortunately, one of these may cost as much as your used 5D2 itself, and are probably most appropriate if you own something like a 1DX or similar.
