Ok here we go again with the strobe questions, ok guys if you had 2 160 watts strobes, how would you position it in a portrait shot, one shoot through and one silver bounce umbrella or both silver bounce?

ok in umbrellas, how far or how close should it be to the strobe unit?

sync and power, which should be brighter than the other? Should my sync strobe be brighter than the slaved one or vice versa?

I have photogenic strobes, so I can go from 3/4, 1/4, 1/8, 1/2 and full.

Thanks a bunch guys!

There are lots of great ideas in scotts book at http://www.lightingmagic.com (external link)

I tend to use the white as main light, off at 45 or 60 degrees to the right. Fill is directly over the camera or very slightly to the left, up high, for good catchlights. I'm considering getting a small dumb slave flash or two to use as a hairlight and backlight - I love the halo effect of having a light behind people pointing at them.

White is a little softer I think, and silver is a little more harsh. I was taught to turn on the model light, and as I move the umbrella in and out, make it so the light just hits inside the edge of the umbrella, in order to avoid light spill over the edges.
The fill should be reduced power. I usually have my main plugged into the hotshoe, but it probably doesn't matter either way. The amount of power (1/8 - full) depends on how much DOF you want. the more light, the smaller the aperture you can use, thus getting more detail in the whole shot. I shoot my main at about 1/4, and sometimes my fill/hairlight is 1/8 or less. I tend to like using a reflector instead of a strobe for fill, and use my second strobe for a hairlight. depends on how you shoot.
