Hi guys,

I have just sold all my Canon gear and moved to Nikon. Its been about a year since I was 'serious' with the camera and since I once again have a bunch of expensive gear I want to make sure its insured and protected.

I used to have a professional policy with Photoguard, luckily never had to make a claim. I just did a google for photography insurance and now see there appears to be a wider choice of companies willing to insure photographers.

So what insurer would people recommend and what are your experiences from dealing with them?

Is Photoguard still my best bet or are they difficult?

Tom

We had cover from Aaduki when we were wedding photographers (2006-2012), cover was underwritten by Hiscox, maybe a bit expensive but we had full cover for equipment including any left unattended in the vehicle (daytime or overnight), as well as public liability, professional indemnity and employers cover.

We did make one claim - for professional indemnity, obviously I'm not going to go into great detail about this, but customer was clearly in the wrong - however Aaduki/Hiscox said fighting it would prevent us serving the rest of our customers properly & they settled it incredibly quickly with appropriate paperwork from customer - in fact the customer never knew insurance company was involved.

So I can't speak too highly of them - they enabled us to get on with our normal business at what could have been a very difficult time.

I have state farm with personal articles policy for over a year now but didn't have a chance to make a claim yet so can't tell about claim but I have heard positive from many people for the service and claim.

Just curious about total spent in premiums over the years, vs. what kind of payout value against that one claim

Payout was approx 50% of that one year's premium - but you're surely not suggesting a working business should trade without insurance cover for public liability and professional indemnity, are you?

Had we needed to make a claim for stolen equipment, or a public liability issue, that could easily have been many multiples of all the premiums we ever paid.

You only find out how good insurers are when you actually need to make a claim, and I was just pointing out that my experience with Aaduki/Hiscox was excellent.

No, merely wondering about relative cost vs. benefit in dollars. Merely cost vs. replacement value of equipment, which is what most photographers think about, when considering 'inlane marine' coverage for equipment. Ignoring the other implications of being in business without liability insurance, etc.
