Known as Unconditional Surrender, or more colloquially, The Kissing Statue, it is part of a series of computer-generated statues by Seward Johnson that resemble an iconic 1945 photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt, V–J day in Times Square.
A copy, now entitled Embracing Peace, was installed in Tuna Harbor Park, San Diego, CA in 2007 near the USS Midway Museum. The statue, made of a foam core with a urethane outer layer, was scheduled to be on loan through August 2010, but after a May 2012 restoration, it has now become permanent with a bronze dedication plaque.
During the summer months, fireworks are often launched off the bow of the Midway after private parties.
