I have seen plenty of stuff comparing the 80D to the 7D mkII or the 70D but I am struggling to find anything comparing it to the original 7D. I am almost positive the DR and noise will be better on the 80, I am more interested in the AF performance. I shoot a little bit of everything but one thing I want to make sure it does pretty well is bike racing and other sports. The 7D does a pretty good job so I don't want to lose performance but there are some specs that I really like about the 80D.

I am sure it is out there but my search Fu can't find it.

Heya,

The 7D's AF is still robust, but you're comparing an older chipset where they needed a separate chip for AF. The newer processors can handle it on one processor. The 80D will AF just fine for what you're after, and be more sensitive to boot (-3 EV). It's not the same as the 7D2, nor as fast, so if you're focusing on the 7D series speed & AF, maybe look at the 7D2 more? The 80D is slower than the 7D, but 1 fps difference may not matter to you. But the servo performance should be pretty close, close enough that I wouldn't worry... especially since the 80D has the more sensitive cross point now giving it the edge.

Very best,

I have been happy with the 7D, i actually picked it up here used a little more than a year ago to replace the heavy 1D IIn. It has done well in that regard and i would be keeping it.

I know the 7D II is beyond the original and 80D but there are some things that are on the 80D that are very appealing. I just don't want to take a step back I'm Af performance to get some of those features.

I hear ya,

I too went from a 1D II to a 7D, ultimately because I wanted more resolution, everything else I was happy with the 1D II. But 8MP vs 18MP makes a difference for large crops on distant subjects and that really did matter more to me. The 7D files are not as clean, funny enough, as the 1D II files, at least to me. I too am watching the latest releases as I do not buy what's new, I buy it after a few years. Right now, if I were to choose between the 7D2 & the 80D, I honestly think I'd get the 80D for what I do. I never use 8FPS of either my 1D II nor 7D. I mostly do bursts of 3 and that's it. I can live without more FPS. I think 6~7 FPS is fine for birds really, but I'm not doing it for a living, so I don't need every extra frame, but that's just my situation. The 80D has a lot of things that are interesting such as the much improved dynamic range and the much more sensitive AF cross points that can do -3 EV like the 6D and 7D2 can, which is very impressive. I'll take the more sensitive AF cross points over the 1 FPS difference for sure, as it means more shots in low light locking on. I have no care for video, so none of the video options on these cameras matter to me.

If I were shopping the 7D2, I would have to actually choose between a 1DIV and the 7D2 and I'd probably lean towards the 1DIV probably.

Unless something crazy happens in the next few years, I'm sure I"ll replace my 7D eventually with either an 80D or a 1DIV, but probably the 80D for size/weight.

Very best,

Yeah I think you summed up where I am at in my decision making. Hoping someone will chime in with some experience with the 2.

Anything special about the kind of SD card needed for the 80D?

This one should be fine...right? Other recommendations?

1DIV. Way better than 7D. Cheaper than 7D2.

I have had 1 series, still have the 1D Classic, and while they are great I don't want the weight any more. They are big and heavy.

If you are buying a new camera, I am sure you'll get equivalent/better AF than the 7D. While it was a leader when it was released, it is now about 7 years old. So is the AF. I owned a 60D, 7D, and 6D at the same time. Of the three, the 6D, using the center point only, was noticeably more responsive than the 60D or 7D, all in AI-Servo. The 6D is also incredibly, uncannily accurate. The 7D (19 cross points) and the 60D (9 cross points) are more versatile than the 6D, but the 6D is incredibly good with the center point. Just to add some perspective to how badly the 6D SUCKS with peripheral points in AI-Servo, both the 60D and 7D were better. I sold both of them for a 1DIV. It is a large improvement over either/both.

I am sure any modern camera will equal/better the 7D.

I have both the 7D and the 80D
Overall the 80D is better for me and I believe will be better for you
The AF performance is very good but there are few things to notice
The 7D has a joystick the 80 does not
The 7D has spot focus and focus expansion both are useful, the 80D has zone focus that is comparable to the expansion
Since you do want to do bike racing based on my experience the 80D will do very well as you have more points and your subject is relatively large
