We are making plans to leave NE Missouri on Sept 30th, drive to Niagra Falls then into Ontario. I'm planning to make a large sweeping curve in Ontario from the Falls that will take us through Algonquin park, then possibly on the return trip cross the border into Minnesota.
If anyone is familiar with the area and has any must see, can't miss places to visit I would appreciate hearing from you. We may be in Algonquin for two days but can stay longer if we need to.
Thanks,
Steve

Are you planing on just driving though or doing canoeing into the interior while you're there?

Not saying we won't do some canoeing but the interior is not possible on this trip. Will most likely be driving through and hiking trails that may have interesting landscapes to see.

I've heard lots of nice things about Tettegouche State Park (external link) in Minnesota, between the Canadian border and Duluth. Some nice waterfalls, wildlife, hiking trails, etc. It's on our future list to check out.

Here's a map Steve of the Algonquin Corridor, It shows the many trails and locations. The corridor and its many activities are referred to the road marks and miles like... Mile marker #43 Visiter Centre.. Spruce Bog Board walk Mile Marker #42... Lookout trail...Mile Marker #40 a must for anyone interested in Algonquin Park. You never know just where things will be but ill fill you in more as we get closer to the end of the month.

Thank you Jeff, that is the kind of map I was hoping to see and probably will be able to get when we near the park. Although I received some info and a nice map of Ontario from the parks division, I really didn't get the detailed info that I'd like. We plan to enter from Whitney, still don't know what route we will take from Niagra Falls to get there. What we like to do is plan a route before leaving home with interesting landmarks along the way. All we know is about how long we can be away from home. Our plans usually change soon after the trip begins.
My wife is already giving me that look as I've been known to plan the route by way of Cabela's stores and I believe there is one not far from you.
Hiking for good views or wildlife is high on our want to do list.

right so you need to enter from the west gate, it will bring you up through Muskoka.. a very pretty landscape and cottage country full of lakes and rivers hills and rock cuts... The Canadian shield... where Jake. CyberDyneSystems lived for a time. Cabalas has a store in Barrie Ontario off the hwy 400 ..Get off at Maple view Ave just as your coming into Barrie, you cant miss it the back of the store you can see from the hwy. its not the biggest Cabelas Ive been in but it has most of the good stuff. As for the wild life... i will fill you in as to where things are as we get there. I may even be able to join you for a bit who knows. Do a search on google for Jeff's Map of Algonquin Park it will be a great help in your Algonquin adventure. The Whitney side and south is more like two lane hwy and medium size towns.. Not really what your looking for I don't think. but the west side is picturesque and I'm sure you will love it. its more the Robert Batman kind of scenery.

As long as we don't get to much rain you can expect a colour show like no other...

johnohio, a month from now I should know a lot more but I haven't been there myself. We are planning to leave Mo on 9/29 and probably won't get to Algonquin until 10/3 or 10/4.
I know you can google algonquin and get a live chat that could be of some help. Also I like going to tripadvisor, look at things to do in algonquin in the forum section and ask questions there. Someone will answer quickly.
I hope to do a lot of hiking, just haven't decided which trails yet. May make that decision once I get there.
We may meet up somewhere along the way, never know. Good luck and safe traveling to you.

Got to do Hikes .... Lookout, Beaver pond, Two Rivers lookout, Spouse Bog is not long but a must Ive shot everything from Pine Marten to Spruce Grouse in there, Visiters centre is right across the road..That you must do. They have a small Restaurant and it over looks the Boreal and hard wood forest of Ontario plus a souvenir shop. down Opeongo road the is Algonquin outfitter , Ice cream, and outfitter stuff. Mile #31 in the middle of the corridor is the Two rivers store for daily stuff and clothing, and of course the Two Rivers Lookout walk, The entire corridor is 60km long, on the east side there is a small town of Whitney. It is the only place for you to buy groceries. there is a restaurant call... The Mad Musher.. There stuff can be quite good owners name is Steve Dunsford.

On the east side from the Gate ( stop and have a look at the clothing and take your picture buy the big Birch Bark history back drop that has been there since before my time ) you will find nothing but wildlife on the side of the road from there to Whiskey Rapids, next is Hardwood lookout do this one it kinda good. The Mile #15 your at the the Portage Store gift stop and restaurant washroom shower, and Algonquin Outfitter on the lake side, A must stop there... Track and tower is next ..its a bit longer but there is a water fall of sorts and you can walk all the way to Mew lake Camp Ground.

I kinda know about most of Algonquin, I have been living here and camping since before time... well I have pics of me having a bath on the picnic table in a big tupperware bowl.. If you have questions that are of a specific nature I am here to serve lol

I you see wildlife you would like to get out and shoot get yourself and your car completely off the road inside the white line...NOT LIKE THIS

Moose bear and deer Jam's have been a part of Algonquin since the beginning of time watch for them get out take your shots and do it without getting run over or running someone else over. Becareful of the idiot that gets made because you stopped to do what you came here to do. Im sure its the same everywhere but some think its a hwy and that you are nuts to stop...Trust me millions stop and shoot every year. Here we have baiting and Photography in the early stages lol ...
