Right now, in New Zealand, we have just passed the winter solstice. For NZ Maori it is actually the beginning of their new year: the season of Matariki - heralded by the rise of the Pleiades star cluster into our view. Not only does it celebrate the season, but it represents a celebration of the revitalization of Maori culture and identity It has become a major period of celebration in recent years, and in fact the government has announced a public holiday, to begin from 2022, to celebrate the event.
In Auckland, where I live, there has been a proliferation of activities and installations throughout the city, with many clustered around the waterfront.
These photos are taken of a Maori Kapa Haka (competitive haka) group. For each of four days a different group performed in a square in downtown Auckland. They were, without exception hugely talented and performed with great passion to an appreciative audience.
First, a traditional haka was made to challenge and welcome the viewers.
