Not sure what forum scanners belong in, the names of forums give no clue.

I have a Canon 8800F working just fine under Win 7 64-bit. Can anyone direct me to an equivalent (or better, or course) scanner which works under Windows 10?

  • My 8800F lacks 4x5" transparency support, while my 8000F had it.
  • The Canon 9900F has 4x5 transparency support but it is not officially supported by Canon under Win10
  • The Canon 9000F lacks 4x5 transparency support.
  • And apparently none of the current Canon scanners does larger than 35mm format
  • (although I have not exhaustively looked at every model on the d*mned Canon website, the useless POS)

Trying to plan my eventual migration to Win10 PC, but want to know which new products I should be getting to provide all of the capabilities supported in Win7 by Canon...their lack of support under Win10 for products certainly is not any help!

Using Vuescan may not be a help, as it is my understanding that Vuescan depends upon the presence of drivers for a device, so no driver = no Vuescan, or so I am led to believe.

The lack of a current printer equivalent to the iP4xxx currently also does not help...I chose a multipurpose office machine (scanner/printer) and not certain it is going to print as nicely and with economy of ink like the picoliter Canon iP4000/iP4200 photo printer series.

At least I have defeated the Microsoft sneaky forced upgrade to Win10, I no longer get that message that makes you think you can avoid the upgrade!

Not sure if this answers any of your questions but FWIW I recently got two Win 10 computers (clean install) and tried to migrate some existing scanners and printers to them from old XP machines.

One small old Canon scanner (Lide 20?) would not work at all. No driver was available, so that was now junk.

A Canoscan 8400F works just fine with no driver update.

A Canon iP4200 printer worked OK but had a crippled menu until I downloaded and installed (with some difficulty) a Win 8 driver, then all worked perfectly.

Thx for tip about iP4200 working on Win 10 using the Win 8 driver for that printer!

Not clear if there needs to be a Canon-supplied driver (or not), or their software gets around the lack of Canon-supplied driver (or I need to try to use Win8 driver for the scanner).

it might depend on the scanner, but I know for a fact that my Nikon SuperCool Scan 8000ED is supported with their software and that Nikon dropped all support for that scanner years ago.

I owned a current version of their software a long time ago, but have not been able to justify buying it for my current set up ... film scanning prices are just too cheap to make any money.

edit: it shows that your scanner is fully supported under Windows 10 (64bit)

I am using an 8800F with Windows 10 and it works fine with the Canon Scan Gear driver 13.0.5, which I think was originally a Win 8 driver.
I also use an old Epson 1250 (which I don't think it has been supported by Epson since XP) with Vuescan - no Epson driver needed.

Go to https://www.usa.canon.com …er/windows-compatibility/ (external link) and scroll down to the listed scanners series. Then hit the + off to the right to expand the list and see what is compatible.

Thanks for reassurances of 8800F support under Win10, and corroboration that it works fine (at least with Scan Gear driver 13.0.5), guys! Great relief that Win10 does not leave me in a lurch and less capability than I had.

The official Canon posiiton on both my printer and my scanner is "Canon is not issuing drivers for this product to support the Windows 10 operating system, Windows 7 or Windows 8 drivers should function in the new Windows 10 environment with some limitations which are currently unknown to Canon."

All my Canon products probably have "some limitations which are currently unknown to Canon", so I guess their lawyers figure that covers Canon's rear end against just about anything!

Methinks it is simply corporate laziness to ensure support for its hardware products under new O/S...until a lot of time has passed, at best. I recall how long it took for Canon to get Win7 support for many of its products, too, but if you waited long enough before upgrading the pain was much less.

Long term followup on this thread...

I bought a new PC, now just short of a year ago. It came with Win10 Home 64-bit. It came time to try to hook up my Canon 8800F and try to make it work. At first, I assumed I would not be able to get it to work, so I got VueScan x64 and loaded it, then got it to (successfully) work with my Canon 8800F.
But I did not stop there. I did a little searching of the web, and found enough information to try to set up the Canon 8800F under Windows 10, even though Canon choose to NOT ensure driver compatability moving forward. And then I tried to load the MP Navigator program, that Canon had provided with the scanner, because I liked the results of transparency scans and because my wife knew how to use it.

Success!!

Unfortunately I do not recall the exact details, but as I recall I downloaded the Windows 8.1 64 bit Driver and then ran the installer in compatibility mode for Windows. I have MP Navigator EX 1.0 running on Windows 10...not sure I had to do anything special to get it to run. The point is

It is possible to run the Canon 8800F in the Windows 10 environment.
