I have, for some time now, considered this lense. I have waded through most of what is here and am wondering about the "MACRO" side of this lense - good or bad? And, lastly, will this lense work on a 5D III or the present 5DII?
While it does say "macro" on the lens, its minimum focusing distance is 1.5m or about 59 inches. It's maximum magnification according to its specs is 0.26x.
Compare with the new 100mm L macro, whose minimum distance is 0.30m or about 12 inches, and a magnification of 1x. This is true 1:1 magnification.
This being said, when extended close to its 300mm focal length, and at its closest focusing distance, things can really fill the viewfinder! But it's not really a true "macro" lens.
Of course one can always use extension tubes with it to get true macro shooting.
And as others have said, because it's an EF lens, it can mount on full frame bodies, from the 5DI, through 5DII, and all the 1D's. LOL, even the brand new 1DX itself!
