Day 6 of our safari saw us down in the Ngorongoro Crater (actually Caldera). It is 30x20km across and acts as a mini ecosystem all on its own as the steep walls minimize migration in and out of the Caldera.

The animals are a bit more human acclimatized and so aren't as skittish when the vehicles pass by.

1. Hippos just hanging out

Looks like a great trip! I went to SA, Botswana and Zimbabwe last year and loved Africa, I am jonesing to go back... but having to save my pennies. I would love to go back for an Ngorogoro / Masia Mara trip. Have you been to Africa before? How did Ngorogoro compare to other sites?

We did a 7 day trip that included Tarangire, Serengeti (central and North), Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara.

I had been to Africa before. To give you an idea - I LOVED the trip I did back in 2009 so much, and the guide that we had was so good that I did the EXACT same trip again with the same guide :D

We saw some beautiful Giraffes in Tarangire

Very well done. I really enjoyed looking at your shots. I will put this area down as a place to visit on my next trip.

Kobus defassa!! The ellipsiprymnus has a white circle, not a white rump.

I am only posting this because you have taken the trouble to be very specific in your descriptions.

To be fair they both appear to be technically subspecies of Kobus ellipsiprymnus

From the IUCN redlist site...

Two subspecies are recognized (formerly regarded as distinct species): Defassa Waterbuck (K. e. defassa) and Ellipsen Waterbuck (K. e. ellipsiprymnus). Lorenzen et al. (2006) found a high degree of genetic differentiation between the subspecies and strongly confirmed hybridization in Kenya’s Nairobi N.P. population.

But I had not known that there were two types...

I guess these would be Kobus ellipsirymnus defassa in correct taxonomy.

Thanks! Always cool to learn new things!
