I'd be curious to know what alternatives are reccomended for something informal, like Flickr is? I use it but minimally as a means to share pics with family.

I moved my photosharing dollars to Ipernity (external link) over two years ago, during one of Flickr's abysmal underhauls. I still keep a Flickr account just for the sake of some groups and contacts, none of which are on Ipernity. Flickr really sux, mostly. Their Pro account has essentially nothing to offer: Stats? Not interested in ego trips –not like any of them visitors buy anything anyway; no ads? I don't get any ads thanks to ad-blocking plugins and mechanisms. Space/number of images was the only real incentive for a Pro account, but then they made another stupid decision and gave every free account GBs of space –since I only post low res images and only about one to three per week on average, am I gonna care about more space?

Flickr has been dead for years, or at least on life-support.

I don't think Verizon bodes well for any Flickr fans out there, personally.

Convenient for hosting images, and that's about it, it's dead as heck.

Already pulled everything relevant from Flickr

Yup, and now Verizon is forcing smartphone users into higher priced plans.

.

Although I have been a Flickr user for many years, I really don't care if they cease to exist. Why? Because a few years ago, they changed a lot of stuff on their site - the way it works and all. Then less than a year later they made more changes. Then more changes. Then more. I can't just learn how the site works and then call it good. To continue to use Flickr, I need to continually negotiate my way thru changes in the layout and in the way things work there. I am constantly having to re-learn what to click on to get stuff to happen. I hate that. I like sites that pretty much stay the same year after year after year. So I have all but abandoned my Flickr account. Haven't uploaded a photo there in years. It just ain't worth it.

I doubt if it's the end of Flickr. Even if V. doesn't want it, I think they'd find a buyer with interest in the platform. Either way, it's not my primary hosting venue, so it's no skin off my nose if it tanks.

A lot of us felt the same way. I think that's why Ipernity was launched: it aimed to look just like Flickr before the changes.

I like Flickr for personal uses. Works great.

People complaining that they don't like it because they change things are going to complain about any website - they all update and change things around.

False. I comlain abut Flickr. I have not complained about HuntFishNW.com, HuntWA.com, NatureScapes, 500px, WildlifeSouth.com, Google, YouTube, the FossilForum.com, Pandora Radio, TWC.com, eSnipe.com, or eBay. None of these sites have changed things around anywhere near as much as Flickr has. Not even our own POTN, with entirely new software, written from scratch, has changed anywhere near as much as Flickr.

So no, someone complaining about Flickr because of how much they have changed things is not going to complain about any website. Not so at all.

I love flickr...the app is super handy to always have tons of photos on hand to show...any other recomendations for hosting spots that allow you to make things private, or public, and also have an app?

No, but Instagram has 500 million users, while Flickr has about 25
