Its really between the new AMD RX480 or the Nvidia 1060

I have a AMD setup

FX8350
16gb RAM
Samsung SSD

It looks like the 1060 outperforms the RX480 but would the 480 do better when paired with an AMD cpu??

I am really torn. I need to complete my system. I am still running on a old gtx460

Pairing an AMD CPU with an AMD GPU doesn't buy you much so just get the one prefer.

Honestly, availability is going to be a bigger problem. If you want one right now it will be more about what you can actually find.

I'd wait for some aftermarket 480 or 1060 price to come down. The reviewers have been saying the reference 480 is loud while the 1060 is in it's early adopters taxing stage right now.

There are some really good deals to be had on 970 and 980's right now, even better deals if you don't mind buying used.

Are you processing stills or video? For stills, it makes no difference. If you're using Adobe processing software, Adobe tailors its products to work first and best with Nvidia GPUs. A relatively inexpensive 960 will do exactly as well with still images as anything more powerful.

If you're processing video, the more powerful processors will give you a bit more...but not much. Onboard ram will matter more than CPU power.

What are your plans with the system? If you're not gaming either card is kinda overkill in my opinion.

If you are gaming, I've got an MSI R9 390 for sale for less than either of the cards you mentioned ;)

I mentioned onboard ram before. This is the big difference it made for me when I switched from an Nvidia 960 with 2gb of ram to the same card with 4gb of ram:

With only 2gb, I ran into very frequent fatal out of memory areas when "scrubbing" through a sequence (moving quickly through the sequence, for instance, to find a particular point) in Premiere Pro. The program is trying to cache as you scrub, and it didn't take much with a two- or three-camera sequence to start getting fatal errors.

With 4 gb of ram, that problem went away.

I guess the question is what resolution is your monitor.
Both the 970 and 1060 seem to be made for 1080p/60fps gaming but may not be enough if you have a 1440p monitor or higher.

Get a nvidia 980ti. It scores better than the 1060 (so does the base 980).

980 Ti's are hitting in like mid $300 range now so that link is about ~$100 outdated... But yeah, those are a killer buy right now.

Its all out of budget now but thinking slightly longer term
