From a recent visit to Grandfather Mountain in Linville, NC. Home of the "1 mile above sea level" swinging bridge....

Nice series . When I was there it was so crowded that you couldn't get near the bridge.

Thanks Steve. We went pretty early in the day. Plus we were there during the Highland Games. The traffic around Linville during this event probably kept the Grandfather Mountain visitor count down.

I have been thinking of taking a trip across the state in the fall to hike around Grandfather mountain. Unless I am mistaken, the swinging bridge is in the privately owned park and not the state park correct?

I have some time to determine if I want to pay to get on the private park or not.

From what I read, a major portion of Grandfather Mountain became a State Park in 2008. However, the "developed portion" (the bridge, nature museum, and animal habitats) is managed by a non-profit organization and they charge $20 / adult to enter the property. You can read the details of the purchase and current management of the property at the following link....

However, I also saw that you can access the trails throughout Grandfather Mountain from a couple of off-property trail heads at no charge.
