I'm a Brit who will be visiting NYC in October this year. I had been planning to bring the 5D2, 16-35mm and 24-105mm, but I am having second thoughts. I've learned to use my Canon G7X and am wondering whether the extra weight and bulk of the full size camera will be worth the effort.

Perhaps the biggest difference would be the extra width I get out of the 16mm focal length. Indeed, that was why I bought the UWA in the first place. But... I don't know. Would a visit to NYC give me much opportunity to use that extra width?

It depends on what you want to shoot. If you want any pictures of buildings in their entirety you're going to need that UWA.

If you've never been to NYC you'll be taken back on just how massive it really is once you get there.

I live in NY and I find that for some things here I need something a little wider than my 24-70mm f/2.8.

Alan, you get to the top of one of the towers, like Rockefeller Center, and you'll be very glad you have the 16-35. Also, there's a subway station near the World Trade Center where you can buy a round trip ticket that takes you one subway stop across the Hudson River to the New Jersey side and you'll have a great view of the entire skyline. Another great spot for a UWA.

I go up to NYC from DC a couple times a year. Here are some samples of what you can get with different lenses on the 5D3, as well as the very capable little G16. If you click on an image, over on the right you can click on Info and see the focal length and other settings.

Whatever you bring will work. NYC is fantastic! Yes, UWA works great to get photos of skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building. Still, the 70-200 from Central Park did a fine job of one of the new skyscrapers 432 Park Avenue (image below).

Have a great time, and enjoy the city!

Man up!! Carry the gear you need to do the job regardless of if it is a few pounds heavier. Muscles, use them or lose them.

I do NYC with a heavy 5DIII, the infamous Brick 24-70 L , a 16-35 L and a 'light' telephoto 70-200 f4.
Here's what I saw: https://flic.kr/s/aHsjvcmThv (external link)

I have most situations covered. And I leave NYC having NO regrets about shots lost due to not having the proper lens in my gear.

I have he same setup, except the 100-400 instead of the 70-200. Yeah it's a pain to carry around the city. Though I usually leave the 100-400 at home. But I just added the 16-35 for the exact reason you mentioned, I don't want to miss a great shot because I didn't have the right gear.

What you say makes sense, my only concern is that it's a family holiday. Photography will have to come in second place.

But I am sure there will still be loads of opportunities as the kids insist on going to the shops etc...

Probably will go with the 16-35 and 70-200. Anything that requires something between 35 and 70mm can just be cropped later!

Some great pics there - I especially like the Flatiron building with the roof parallel to the top of the frame

16-35 f/4 L IS, 24-70 f/4 L IS and the 70-200 f/4 L IS are my travel walk around lenses whether in New York, Rome or any other city. If I had to leave one home it would be the 24-70 range. Love the wide and for me a 70-200 is a must for the architectural details that catch my eye. I even leave the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS Mark IImore and more to reduce the weight.
Hope the trip went well.

I completely forgot to reply here, thank you for resurrecting the thread!

I ended up mostly using the 16-35mm and the 70-200mm. I also left the SLR in the hotel and used the G7X a fair bit too.

I've barely started processing my pictures yet, but have at least processed one per day for my Project365. I'll post them on a "photo sharing" thread.

However, the best picture I have seen came from my iPhone when I went out for a run over the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges - a significant application of the "get up early" filter gave me this (it's worth clicking through; the bigger the better!)

Thank you for the suggestions, everyone - it was a good week
