This is my initial review for the Neewer 66in Carbon Tripod. $89 on Amazon.

The really neat thing about this is that I can use a full-size tripod that has less weight overall to my backpack than a much smaller tripod. By going up a size, the legs are then strong and long enough to be used as trekking poles. I feel confident I have enough miles of testing done to know the legs are going to work well as trekking poles on the 66 inch version. I am 6 feet 4 inches tall, and the trekking poles are just long enough for me to set my hand at my maximum comfort height.

For longevity, I am going to swap out the spikes for some carbide tips and mud baskets. I might also put some lightweight scratch resistance to the lower carbon fiber of the leg, as carbon fiber really sucks at taking sharp impacts to the sides. If these things can last at least 500 miles without breaking in normal use, I will consider it a success. For more extreme mountaineering type stuff, I will still use my dedicated trekking poles, though.

Thanks for the detailed review......I too have been loooking for a new tripod as my old old gitzo is on its last legs and I dont want spend a heap on a new Gitzo especially as the Chinese are really getting their act together on making quality tripods at a 1/4 the price of Manfrotto , Gitzo etc. Like you I also hike with Hiking poles and if this tripod has a reasonable hiking pole it will be an added bonus as I can use the pole instead of my dedicated poles. Although its only one pole but thats ok for me for day hike. Only need two poles with decent handgrips etc if its multi day and Im carrying heavier pack....And I wouldnt be taking a tripod on a multiday anyway so its all good. I will look this up in Amazon and hopefully shipping will be reasonable to Australia!

Cheers

Again - thanks for the review.

I have a Manfrotto 055XPROB and a 488CR2 ball head. (I think those are the numbers anyway.) Together, I think it weighs 6-7 lbs. I don't trek around like you do, but would like to go with something lighter without spending $200-$300 on Manfrotto carbon fiber legs. I admittedly don't know a lot about tripods, heads, etc. It looks like this one comes with a ball head. Would I be able to use the Manfrotto ball head I have on this one? I like having the quick release. It also looks like it already has a quick release type mount, but does it come with a plate? I didn't see this info on the Amazon listing.

Thanks for the review! I have a 055proxb with 498RC2 as my heavy duty tripod, but want something small and lightweight to throw in my new light stand backpack. I was considering the Amazonbasics Carbon Fiber tripod for around $100, but this looks pretty good. The Dolica's are also nice looking and provide very similar features for about 2/3 the price of the Amazonbasics. Seems like quite a few decent options in this price range.
