Have shot SLR/DSLR's for years but am getting tired of lugging it around. I had a Fuji X10 a few years back and really liked that camera but sold it to pick up a 60D which I've had the last 3 years. The last few weeks I've been using a G15 that my g/f gave me because she only uses her phone. I've been pretty impressed with it but it has me thinking that a newer camera would be even better.

I'm looking at the G5X for it's relatively compact size and the built in EVF. Would there be much of a decrease in image quality between this and my 60D? I shoot nature, abstract, architectural details, landscape and macro. Obviously with macro I won't have the 1:1 I can get now.

Can the G5X do manual focusing and focus peaking? At least that way I could still do some focus stacking. Was also considering the G1X Mark II but would have to get the optional EVF since I'm not a huge fan of shooting with the screen on the back. Anything else I should be looking at?

I know nothing of the G5X. But I have been using a G15 for my travel/pocket camera for several years. I am still happy with it. Like you, I had a 60D before the G15. I mostly used a 15-85 with it. To me, the G15 rivals the 60D/15-85 IQ, mainly because the fast glass allows the ISO to be set 2-stops faster than you can get with the 15-85. The G15 is not nearly as versatile, but I don't find the 60D/15-85 very pocketable.

I have had my G5X since March and I love it! The EVF is super and I use it for 99% of my shots. It is invaluable in bright sunshine. I shoot weddings as a hobby and I have done dozens of them with my 7D and 5D. I believe that if the lighting was good I could shoot a wedding with the G5X! One wart with the G5X is battery life...you only get around 200 shots and the battery goes dead! I just bought a second Canon battery to solve that problem.

I find the images I take are sharp and virbrant. With 20.1MP you can crop as much as you want and still have a sharp photo. Check out the review below:

There are limitations to the G5x. It can take great photos in good light and full manual control is nice. The size is really handy so carrying it is easy. Most don't pay attention when you start photographing.

It takes longer to write to the card making follow up shots take longer. The viewfinder is smaller and both it and the screen lag your shots making it harder to get good framing on moving subjects. Low light high ISO gets noisy quicker.

Resolution is good enough that you can shoot loose and get decent 8x10's in reasonable light. I won't sell mine but it isn't going to replace a DSLR, either.

Thanks for the replies. I've heard about the poor battery life. Something I've noticed is that there doesn't seem to be many reviews out there on YouTube. Has the camera never really caught on?

I just find that I'm tired of lugging around the 60D. Last month I had to leave it behind on a 17.5 km hike because there was no room in my backpack, missing out on some great shots because at the time I only had my cellphone. I didnt have the G15 at the time.

My gear is currently for sale and once it's all sold I'll look at getting something else. I'm not in a huge rush since I have the G15. Maybe there will be some new offerings in the Fall.

Since you'll be shooting mostly landscape rather than action, the G5X should work for what your needs are. You can also rent the G5X from lensrental.com for a trial period to see if it meets your expectations. It beats paying hundreds only to find that it's not the compact you're looking for.

I've decided to hold off for now. I had my gear for sale for about 2 weeks and sold my 40mm STM which I rarely used anyway. I had zero interest in the rest of my stuff. I spent some time looking into the other cameras out there and wasn't totally sold on any of them. So I think I'll wait to see what the Fall brings. I may end up just upgrading my 60D to an 80D since I have decent glass and just use the G15 when I want something light. Eventually though I'll want to upgrade the G15 to something that takes better images. In the meantime it's fine.

With respect to the problems you outlined up front, I fail to see the logic behind moving from a 60D to an 80D. You are keeping the same size camera and with respect to your shooting style I doubt the 80D brings much to the table in the way of "must have" features.

True.

I go through this every few months. Don't get me wrong I like the 60D. Some of the short comings I find with it though are the AF, poor noise performance and dynamic range all of which the 80D would improve on. I sometimes like to shoot birds around the yard and find the 60D AF leaves a lot to be desired.

Every time I start to look at getting rid of it I get hung up on the poor battery life, lesser image quality, no true macro (I like focus stacking), shutter lag, etc of the smaller cameras. I think in the end I will need to have both a DSLR (for when I want to do macro, birds and higher quality stuff) and a nice pocketable camera (for times that carrying around the DSLR isn't practical).

Right now I have both (60D and G15) but both could be improved upon.
