So I'm leaving tomorrow to head to a Ranch in west texas for 5 days. My intention is to take some Astro photography, some landscape, mostly photos of my kids and have also been given the task of taking photos of the Ranch for publication purposes. I will be taking photos of the locations, food, people, ranchers, activities, horse rides, etc.

So.. For giggles... what 3 lenses would YOU take out of my kit? Lets see which way the polls show.

I will be using the 5D3 for my photography there FYI.

(I'll be taking more than 3 lenses, and my 600RTs as well but want to see the top 3 from that everyone here would pick from)

But will also take the 24 1.4 and 12mm fisheye both for the astro stuff.

Mine is solid. Super sharp. The 24/35/50 are basically deliver the same exact awesome from the time I've used them. I'm anxiously waiting for the 85 art and possibly will complete the set and pick up the 20.

how does the 24 handle coma? supposedly, the tam 15-30 is king with coma.

15-30 is king for my understanding and the 24 isn't great. I'm going to TRY to take some astro stuff for me, personal stuff. I don't feel like lugging the big ol 15-30 around for that.

with astro, you have to expose fast, hence a fast lens. At 15mm, you have like 25 seconds to expose, but at 30mm, you probably have only 4-5 seconds, and with pitch black skies..... you get the point, F4 will be a pain, and even 2.8 is fairly slow at the longer focal lengths, where I actually prefer astro. The more the MW covers the frame, the better.

Thanks. It's the only reason I'm taking the 24 1.4. I really don't feel like taking the 15-30 since I just got the F4 IS canon so I'm going to try the canon out but will take the 24 for backup. I also never leave my 12mm 2.8 FE so will try that out also. The 24 I can stack images if I can't get the FOV I want.

I won't be in perfect dark skys. But severely better than where I'm at now.

My main bag is packed. 24-70 as main lens, 16-35 F4, 70-200 F4 and 12mm FE in my Trifecta think tank bag. may slip the 15-30 and for sure the 24A in my lighting bag just in case.

I'm driving so room is not an issue.

16-35 f4
24-70 2.8
and 200L

though I only brought the 16-35 and 24-70L on my last vacation but if I had a someone who would carry all my luggage I would definitely have brought the 200L IS

lol... wife is griping that I'm taking too much photo stuff but I'm really not.

Think Tank Trifecta
Lowepro 450aw bag
1 stand
1 tripod
1 24" softbox
1 40x60 reflector

Well I'm taking the Phantom 3 too and thats a pelican storm case so it's kinda big but it's really a minimalist kit for traveling and I have no clue if the owners are going to want group shots or what.

Trifecat Bag: 70-200 F4 IS, 16-35 F4 IS, 24-70 2.8, 12mm FE
450aw: 200 F2, 24A, 50A 15-30, 600RT & trigger, CL360 bare bulb, speed pro bracket, triggers, go pro 4 w/ accessories

We are staying in the cabin closest to the main lodge/pool/recreation areas so I'll have no issue walking to/from and swapping anything I may need. I'm only booked to take photos for the ranch for one day out of the 5 we are there. I'll enjoy myself most the time :)

Out at the ranch... Glad I did take the 200L

So far 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 F4 are kings

The 12mm 2.8 fisheye is amazing at night

I am really surprised by how much better the 16-35/4 IS is doing in the poll over the Tammy 15-30/2.8 given he is listing astro as a point of interest.

The Sigma 24 art would seem to be a good mix of aperture and wide angle until you look at the coma where you would need to stop it down past 2.8 to get the coma performance of the 15-30 wide open so its really not gaining you anything and costing you 9mm on the wide side.
