Not totally sure where to put this but I'll stick it in here. This is the result of my first attempt at off-camera flash. My dog is the guinea pig. Annoyingly I have to send in the attachment part to Nikon for a firmware upgrade to get the radio-trigger system to work.

Also I just got my logo finalized and this is the first image I have it on.

How does everything look?

I think it is a great effort. Love how the lighting makes your subject pop from the underexposed background.

Not sure about the logo, I dont use them. It may be considered a little big, and a distraction.

I find it kinda flat. I'da placed the flash a wee bit higher.

And more to camera right maybe.

Where exactly was the light positioned in relation to your dog?

I love the framing on this. Were you kneeling or prone to get this image?

On my belly. My light modifier is a 60" parabolic umbrella and it was positioned to my right. Yes I suppose I was conservative with the flash because very easily I lose detail from her shiny white coat. A few attempts I completely overexposed.

Quite the understatement.

The logo is the first point of interest. Not exactly desirable.

The dog's cute as heck, though.

The light looks good to me.

60" is a massive light source for a small dog, something smaller might give more depth to the subject.

I'm not a big fan of super shallow DOF. Having his ears in focus and a little more detail on his backside is something I would like to see.

Relax folks, I'm sure the logo's size is influenced by the personal marketing considerations of each usage.

It's a fine image too.

I tried it out on people yesterday for my neighbor's family photo shoot:

Love my 60 inch umbrella. Nothing wrong with using it for the dog shot. Big light is wonderful. Go big or go home. Nice shootin. One more tool to help get the job done.

People are so quick to give negative feedback instead of focusing on what's good about an image! Great shot with the dog.....large umbrella or not.

Reading through the responses, they don't seem negative to me. Many mentioned what they liked.

As for the umbrella, it still seems too close to the lens axis. Moving it to at least a 45° angle will increase depth perception, or "pop" as others call it.
