so this is a bird i've never seen before...was out taking waterfall photos near lake tahoe, and stumbled across a tree that sounded like it had an alarm clock in it...non-stop young birds making noise...hung around, the parents showed up...i took some photos that night, but came back again, and the young were sticking their heads out to be fed, so it was good to come back...leaving tahoe tomorrow, but i'm contemplating going back again, as it was a bit of a struggle with the dying light...not the sharpest of shots for sure...

What a great opportunity to find a Woodpecker that I am unfamiliar with as well! Hope you get the chance to return for an update!

thanks, i had talked with another photographer, and he was talking about driving 5 hrs to try and see one...so felt pretty lucky to just stumble across it

thanks, not this time around unfortunately...drove back home...but hopefully in the future...just getting my feet wet in the tahoe area of birding

great find for sure. can't get enough woodpeckers and with a nest hole is a real treat

not going to lie, i've done a fair bit more googling/searching to figure out if there are others around that i could...my dad had mentioned a pileated nest to me a couple years back...no clue what time of the year they nest though
