I'm a wayward Aperture user that has been crossing over to Capture One Pro. Today and tomorrow, CreativeLive will be streaming a Capture One Pro class live. You can ask the instructor questions and interact with others' taking the class. For those unfamiliar with CreativeLive, it is free while the show is running live, and then if you want access afterwards, you can buy the course. I've watched many, many shows live and picked up a great deal of information and inspiration for free. I've also purchased several courses as well.

I'm not an affiliate of CreativeLive, just thought it would be useful to share this upcoming event with others. The class is today and tomorrow (Aug 11-12) and it runs from 9 am to 4 pm PDT. For those in far away time zones, the free broadcast will be re-played twice after each day's live broadcast. This way someone in Australia does not have to watch it in the middle of the night.

Without further ado, here's the link for those wanting to learn more about Capture One Pro:

Bryan

As a follow-up to my original post, I was not impressed by the class. Usually, CreativeLive's courses are really good, but the instructors in this one were all over the place and spent a lot of time bantering back and forth during the first half of the course. There was some useful info during Day 2, but overall I do not think the course is worth paying for.

As for Capture One Pro, I am blown away by all that it can do and the raw processing engine is superb. Admittedly though, I am still learning how to use the software...but I love it so far!

Cheers,
Bryan

I have Capture One installed and use it to process the raw image files from the Leaf Aptus II back. Although I have dabbled with it before, I never really used it because I'm an Adobe Camera Raw user. But what I discovered the other day is that Camera Raw does not do a good job at accurately rendering the colors of the raw files of the Aptus II back. I even tried profiling the Aptus II back using the ColorChecker Passport software but it the colors still do not come close to what I get from Capture One.

So, I used Capture One to generate a DNG file which I can then took into Camera Raw. But for some reason, Camera Raw messed up the DNG file so that it is no longer accessible by PS or even the Adobe Bridge. I had to resort to converting the raw files to PSD files which PS reads in with out any problem, meaning I had to use Capture One to process the raw file rather than Camera Raw.

So, my question for you Capture One users is, what format do you export your image files to so that they can be edited into Photoshop?

TIFF, 16-bit.

Is it worth the effort to change from Lightroom to Capture One? Many new things to learn. I'm just curious.

Most definitely.

C1P runs circles around LR, except in the library module. Still, in all honesty, I'm willing to put up with a mediocre library module (I use Photo Mechanic 5 anyway), in order to have the best RAW processing engine and better, more natural colours. And no cloud BS.

I agree on the Creative Live training. The first day was pretty much a complete waste of time. The second day was a little better in that the instructors spoke more to using the software. You could pick up something here and there, but the training is not structured well at all, particularly if you are coming into Capture 1 Pro as a new user. Overall, the training was a big disappointment and definitely not worth buying.

I attended one of their webinars when I switched. It was version 7 at the time. The webinar was OK, but not really that helpful.

Although computer- and software-related books tend to become obsolete very quickly, I learn more from them than from most videos and webinars; and they're always there for quick reference.

There's a very good book on CaptureOne Pro: https://www.amazon.com …Processing/dp/B01A1XC1IY/ (external link)

Less cryptic than the manual and actually explains what all those controls do and ways to make them work best.

I bought that book a couple of weeks ago and totally agree with you. Excellent book for C1P users!

I do think the pictures do look better from C1 vs LR, but I am having some problems. I jkeep getting an error when I try to print more then once (resError) that I am having a hard time getting their tech support to help with. If I restart C1 thenit prints fine for a print or two.
I also miss the limited editing LR does with 'eyes'.
But it does seem to make the pictures look 'better'!
