Tried to show my 10 year old boy Owen some 2016 Perseid's last night.

We went to bed before 10pm, I set the alarm for 11:30 thinking I'd setup the DSLR on fixed tripod and then wake my boy

Saw a few with my naked eye, DSLR with 11mm ultra-wide angle lens captured this one in top right corner.
That's a plane in lower middle.
Yea, camera has limited FOV (field of view) compared to our eyes.

Perseid meteor

HOSTED PHOTO DISPLAY FAILED: ATTACH id 807731 has been deleted. ]

It's a stable brightness for the whole length of the path and with a sharp start and finish ... looks more like a satellite
highly doubt that it is a meteor

compare it to the meteor in the top right of the top image of mtbdudex's post

I may try tonight.

I'm in Florida with a big rain mass all over us with these tropical storms. I may not have the chance to really image anything. I'm thinking between 2~5AM here will be best, darkest, and best chance of no rain/clouds based on radar and weather predictions.

Very best,

Very best,

I had perfect seeing conditions totally cloudless and a freezing 5 deg C temp
saw a whole bunch of Aquarid shower meteors between 1 am and 3 am
Saw only 2 possible Perseid meteors ... dunno what the heck happened to them they just didn't show
compared to last year when I was avg. 25 / hr with a peak of 35 or so for the best hr

maybe this year's peak is going to be in our daytime here in Sydney, Oz :-(
But I though I would have still been seeing at least 10+ / hr either side of the peak ??

I agree , satellite . Hey Dave , sorry to hear your not seeing any last night . Check again tonight , maybe then will be better . However I do know times where Meteor showers were better on one side of earth than the other side at night . Usually you can find that out on www.spaceweather.com (external link) .

Yeah, it doesn't seem to be nearly the showing that was predicted.

Conditions are pretty poor however. Irritatingly muggy (29C and ~80% humidity at 1am). There's also a fair amount of light pollution here.

I'll probably end up with a few shots, but I don't really have a decent wide angle lens. Just my 18-55 kit lens.

I'd guess I've seen about 5 or 6 during about 1/2 hour or 45 minutes. My camera is doing 30s exposures, so hopefully I'll find some nice surprises.

I woke up 2:30am, there was a break in clouds just overhead.
I went outside just viewing, saw 2, then clouds came back by 3am....

So not a complete bust, but not a burst like the 200/hr would have given...

Very difficult to capture with all the light pollution.

I didn't have storms, but it was mostly cloudy. I had my gear with me "just in case" I got lucky. We had some openings and I did see a few meteors (and an ISS pass), but all in the gaps and bits of clearings in the otherwise mostly poor sky.

I have another public observing event that the club is to host on Saturday, but the forecast for that actually does call for rain. Obviously someone bought some new astronomy gear and we're all being punished for it.

Got about 1500 pictures between my two cameras, certainly wasn't the 200/hr some were predicting (probably in the range of 50-80/hr), I actually think last years show was better. Got a decent number captured though, I don't know why but I feel like the brighter/fireball meteors were earlier when the moon was up and the later/darker it got it seemed like it was mostly weaker fast meteors. Pretty much shot from 10 pm to 4:30 am, got maybe 2 hours of sleep and woke up to a dead car which made my morning way more interesting than I wanted. Hopefully I'll get some pictures processed this afternoon.

As I was packing up I couldn't help but marvel at Orion rising over the horizon around 4 am, it looked huge for some reason. Can't wait to start shooting that constellation this fall.

That last one actually is s FireBall , happens when they explode making a bright ball of fire . If you wanted but to you can upload these to the gallery at www.spaceweather.com (external link) . Would be nice ice additions !
