Hey, I was able to help a friend's teenage daughter get into photography over Christmas, and she is getting better and looking to get a new lens. This seems the logical next lens for her. I actually gave her my 50 1.8 II and it promptly fell apart. I feel bad and am looking for something to replace it with. The yongnuou (sp) 50 1.8 seems like a nice cheap option. I have watched some on ebay go for $40ish or less, but seeing what you guys have here.

Let me know please!

Thanks,

Brian

Yea, I had bad luck with the Canon f/1.8 as well. Borrowed a friends and the barrel popped out. :)

From what I hear, the 50mm f/1.8 STM is suppose to be quite a bit better though I haven't tried one myself.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Shooting full frame or cropped? Maybe the 50mm isn't "the logical next lens for her."

Heya,

For cost, you won't find anything that beats a Yongnuo 50 F1.8 for $40. Even the cheapest Nifties don't go that low. So if you want budget, that's the way to go.

If you want to spend a bit more, the 50 STM is fantastic. I went through two 50 F1.8 II's and they are noisy and annoying, yet sharp. I then swapped to the 50 STM. The 50 STM is silent, fast, sharp, with a metal flange instead of plastic. Great lens. Worth every little penny. You can find them ~$80 used/refurb.

Very best,

used prices on 50mm's have fallen quite a bit.

I bought my 50 stm new at $125 & like you said, it can be found used for less.

prior to my stm version, I used the 50/1.8 Mk I (metal mount, distance scale, etc.) which cost about $50 MORE (used, with uv & orig. hood) than the stm cost (new).

go figure. If I had to chose between them, the stm wins.

otherwise, on a budget, there are some manual focus russian lenses that one could consider - a couple industars 50-2 & 61-1 (55mm - glows slightly in the dark, grin) and the ubiquitous helios 44 series. I have a 44-2/zebra (not cheap) and a 44-M (very economical). I actually prefer the 44-M as it's not a preset aperture.

my 50mm lenses have become a bit of a hobby - my collection is well into double digits. Current faves are the minolta rokkor 58/1.2 and the canon 50/1.2L, with all its quirks. for now...

I can't speak to the yongnuo - which sounds like a real bargain. but if it was my relative, the canon 50/1.8 STM is a nice, workable lens.

good luck & have fun...

Thanks, everyone. I have had the 50 1.8 II, and I currently own the STM, and I agree that it is much better. She is just now getting into it, and has an older 30D. She is doing good work with just the kit lens, so not much money is needed, and I was hoping someone had a Yongnuo or 50 1.8 II for cheap they were wanting to unload.

bannedPermanent ban

Canon sells the 50 STM for $89.99, refurbished, and includes a 12-month warranty. That makes it even better than cheap. That is disposable.

Yep, agreed, that is cheap as we said before, but I am really looking for something less than that for right now.

The Yongnuo is super cheap, but also probably even more likely to fall apart than a 50mm f/1.8 mkII. Mine also fell apart. I broke my 50 STM too, but it was my fault shooting with it in the wind on a beach with ashtray-fine sand. And it works again after I took it all apart and got the sand out of the white gear grease. I just bought another one also to have as a backup. The STM's bokeh still leaves something to be desired, but Canon at least gave it more and rounded aperture blades than the previous niftys. It'd better than the 50mm f/1.4 now IMHO.

you said you wanted cheap.

the general rule, and I find that many if not most issues default to this, is you get what you pay for (hopefully).

for my $$$, the inexpensive lens of my choice is canon's 1.8 stm. not perfect, and not an overall fave, but for an inexpensive 50...

while I have yet to justify canon's discontinued legends: the ef 50/1.0 or the ltm 50/0.95 (no compatible bodies), my current faves for ~50mm lenses are:
the canon 50/1.2L - quirks and all,
an EF mount modified minolta rokkor 58/1.2 manual focus, and
a fuji x-trans zeiss touit 32/1.8 planar - autofocus, w/ff-fov 48mm.

honorable mentions:
the canon 50/2.5 compact macro w/life size converter,
an aus Jena DDR T 50/2.8 - CZJ Tessar, manual focus, and its optical clone
the Zenitar Helios 44M-6 58mm f/2 MC, tessar copy, manual focus

so, starting with the $25 yongnuo, I've listed 8 lenses in the ~50mm range - 7 in ef compatible mounts. I could easily suggest any number of additional honorable mentions.

canon is long overdue in their perpetually rumored overhaul of their 50mm lineup. who knows?

good luck with your search.

every year I tell myself that it's time to cull my crop of 50's, and every year seems to end with more 50's on the shelves.
