The catalogue system of Lightroom makes for a beautiful piece of workflow software. It isn't just a tool you use to adjust photos, it is a start to end system that aids in streamlining the process and allows you to work more effectively, especially for going back to previous photos you have taken.

Lightroom was designed to tie into other systems. Push something out to Photoshop for more detailed editing, then save and return to Lightroom easily. Or export batches of photos with pre-configured setups, or even export straight to any number of services online.

Well said.

Not much comparison between Lightroom and DPP in my view.

Lightroom is much more than just an editing tool for cropping, exposure adjustment, noise reduction and raw conversion. Lightroom also has digital asset management features that allow you to
sort photos by camera model, focal length, or shutter speed. You can also rate your photos and sort by a user defined star rating, flag, or color label. The print module gives you an assortment of
print templates if you are so inclined. There also are options to layout pages to print photo books.

It may not be the easiest program to learn for some, but it is absolutely the first tool I run my images through. Highly recommended...

You can download a trial for free,

Hope this helps,

DPP version 4 has Collections which allow you to manage and group photos from various file locations. You can also sort photos by camera, lens, focal length, shutter speed, aperture and ISO. DPP has checkmarks 1-5 and star ratings 1-5 that can be used to sort and filter photos. You can copy a photo edit "recipe" that you've created from one photo to another or to an entire batch/group of photos. Or save a recipe to a file that can be retrieved at any time and pasted to images.

And you can do all of that, and much more, in Lr. DPP is weak sauce compared to Lr. Of course if it works for you then by all means stick with it. There's nothing wrong with that either.

Having had to borrow an old computer that is still running Win XP, I can't use LR at the moment, so have been stuck with DPP 3.x for use with my 50D. I had forgotten just how bad a RAW converter DPP is. Not that I have ever used it very much, by 300D came with the predecessor to DPP, which was so bad I pretty much went straight out and downloaded RAWShooter Essentials. RAW files that show clipped highlights and very little shadow detail, that would be perfectly fine when processed in Process Version 2012 in either LR/ACR. I can't wait to get my new computer system ordered, and get back to using LR. Oh and yes I do use ALL of the modules in LR for a total workflow approach.

Hi have just bought a new computer after finally upgrading the laptop and I have decided that I need to finally get a "proper" photo editing programme. Up to this point I have been using Canons DPP and picasa but with the new computer and picasa no longer supported I have decided to actually spend Money!!

I only saw one person ("sued5320") mention DPP4. That likely will be supported on your new computer and is a vast improvement over the older DPP 3 version. The current Windows version is Digital Photo Professional 4.4.30 and it is compatible up to Win 10 64 bit.

You can read about it at http://cpn.canon-europe.com …nside_dpp_4_0_software.do (external link) but keep in mind that article dates from August 2014 and some content related to operating systems is not up to date.

I see you are from Ireland so the best download site is likely http://www.canon-europe.com …t/camera_software/#eosdpp (external link).

Yes this is one of the Programmes I currently use. I do have the latest update, DPP is good as a catalogue and for the basic exposure/ cropping edits I have done up to this point. However DPP wont create layers and going into landscape and macro photography, I need layers to go to the next level.
I think I have made up my mind and I will have to go with the Lightroom/photoshop CC package. I think I knew all along that it would end up with that I was just trying to get opinions on the alternatives. Thanks everyone for your inputs.

My point in mentioning a used Rebel has nothing to do with recommending old versus new programs. My point is the recommended software should match the value of your equipment. If one has a camera system worth $100.00 USD or EU 100.00 it would not make since to spend $100.00 USD a year on software. In Drums case, this point is moot though. He has a photographic system that justifies the Adobe CC.

Not disagreeing with you here but another way to look at it also is spending money on $100/yr on software for someone who actually makes money from photography, wether full/part time and ignoring of the value of the DSLR, could be a justification. I mean, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and in this case maybe he is looking to find ways to expedite the editing and cataloging process.

Just to add in, if you really were trying to debate on wether or not to get LR, there is a trial period but I would highly recommend that you spend time every day playing on that trial because LR can be very intimidating upon first launch and a month almost seems like not enough time to really stretch out and get comfy in the application.

I did a trial of LR2 years ago and didn't really "get it". But I kept reading good things about it online. I finally bought it along with Scott Kelby's LR book and read the first few chapters on how to set it up for an efficient workflow before really using it. The last thing you want to do is import a ton of images, then find out your organization scheme sucks and needs to be redone. Figure that stuff out first.

So however you do it, you'll get much more out of LR if you do some learning first.

Well if you are happy with DPP why not get Photoshop Elements for the stuff that DPP won't do.
