A few multi-species flocks have been passing through of late and one again included this Ovenbird, a species more often heard than seen.

Gorgeous series! How do you get away with those low shutter speeds? Are you using some flash?

Excellent shots Al.

Thank you, Carol and Derek, for commenting; I appreciate your taking the time.

I used to use a Better Beamer, Carol, but gave it up as I didn't like the harshness that it sometimes imparted. When I first got my 500 mm, I started generally shooting with the 1/focal length rule at 1/500 sec. I don't use a tripod very often, but do often have the opportunity to shoot off a rest. So, as challenging light conditions dictated, I eventually experimented with lower shutter speeds. I found that 1/250 sec. was normally just fine and I can even hand-hold the lens at that speed, allowing me the luxury of greater depth of field and lower ISOs. I even go down to 1/160 sec. on occasion, though that's pushing it. I credit much of my ability to the unbelievable image stabilization of this lens; it makes all the difference.

These are amazingly sharp Al! I wish I could hand hold a lens and get results like that! Even using a tripod, I can't do that! Well done as always!

Well your technique must be amazing because I use at minimum a monopod with my 600mm II. I guess I have to work on my technique.

Curious name for a bird that doesn't look at all edible (hardly any meat in it).

The shots are true food for the eyes, nonetheless.

It makes a nest that looks like a Dutch oven, hence the name.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Thank you kindly. Your comment reminds me that my old ornithology prof. used to make a big stew, at the summer field camp, from blackbird carcasses that the students made study skins from.
