OK day 5 of rain. Did I ever mention I live in a temperate rain forest?
Anyway we loaded up the kit and headed to the hospital. So Archibald here
is a phone pic of the set up target at 60 feet-

The process took us roughly 5 hours. We did various combinations of the
7Dii, 5Dsr, and 1DXii with 500/4, 400DOii, 100-400ii with 1.4TCiii and when possible
the 2.0TCiii.
I didn't do the short range stuff with the 300ISii or the wide of the 100-400ii; I can do
those at home.

Today guess what? More rain. But a momentary reprieve where a dinky bit of Sun appeared
so I played in the bird studio out back. Here are some examples with the 400DOii with 1.4TCiii-

How much adjustment did you end up needing?

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Small amounts in the big picture....biggest was the 400DOii + 2.0TCiii no matter the body
but the 1DXii needed the least of all no matter which lens/TC combo.
All in all a painless process, just plan on a bit of time depending on number of bodies and lenses; and
know for the bodies I tested it is not fully truly auto; but does give voice prompts for when to change
the micro adjust point.

Also, temperature of the light will have an effect.

That looks like the way to do it, comfy and dry and calm. Wow, 5 hours. With that time investment, I hope you were able to verify all the settings so you have confidence in what you did. You might still want to confirm the settings outdoors under real shooting conditions when you get a chance.

Archibald you are right about the real world.....rain rain rain. But someday we'll have a clearing. Usually in winter we get some clear skies and when we do it's usually 0-10F.
I do feel good that the vast number of settings were not that far off (excepting the 400DOii with 2.0TC) and honestly I was not scratching my head before FoCal saying 'man all
my pictures suck' . I think this was just a curiosity and a way to know that it is me and not the camera.

Kinda surprised it took you that long. Does the software do the 1DX2 automatically or is it in semi automatic mode? I have done my lenses too and I don't remember it taking that long.

That being said, FoCal is definitely the way to do MFA. The very scientific process with statistically sound handling of data is very appealing.

1. We are old and slow.
2. We did it two ways out of three that FoCal has.
3. All the lens/body/tc combos just took us that long
4. We sipped coffee and relaxed with the process, took a few breaks.
5. Tried to follow along and get mentally with the process instead of just turning it over to the machine.
6. Saved all of our files
7. Did have a couple of slow-downs---too many cameras listed on the FoCal server, so had to delete a couple
8. Another slow-down, seems that FoCal likes internet connection to verify your license so had to establish connection.....

I'm sure there were other tiddly slowdowns I can't remember, but for those curious about FoCal I actually enjoyed the process.
Connection of camera to FoCal on the laptop was smooth and your correct, for those three bodies it is not totally auto, it is on my
70D and on my 6D I use Magic Lantern which I think has a version/variant of Dot-tune, or it did the last time I checked; I just updated
Magic Lantern on the 6D and haven't checked lately.

I will say this, it is things like this MFA that make me love my Sonys and Lumix' even more :)

This is interesting stuff. I had never heard of Reiken FoCal until I saw this thread. I used to adjust the focus offset manually so I'm now considering getting this app. What version of the app to you guys recommend I get? Thanks. :)

I would get the pro. That's what I have. it's not that much more and the analysis, reports, etc. are fantastic. The scientific way to approach the problem.

Thanks for the advice. That's what I was thinking of getting also but wanted to make sure it was the right decision. If anybody thinks otherwise, please let me know and why you think so. :)

I had 'regular' but after acquiring lenses longer than 300mm the pro was the only option, so I upgraded.

I can share more thoughts on MFA but read this excellent article first; it just might change your whole view
of MFA-
