Ive been looking into a new camera since I just sold mine and the Sony A series caught my eye because of their amazing video capabilities.

What are the latest models of the a7? Is it the a7II? Also how old is the original a7 and is it any good still???

Im looking into the a6300 as well. Is this newer than the original a7??

If anyone can shed some light on any of these and make my decision easier Id appreciate it.

My main concern is crisp video with possibly high frame rate at least at 1080p. I know the 6300 does 4k at 120fps.

My budget is $1000-$1200(body only if cant get with lens)...what is the best option here.

I shoot everything and I don't need a camera that is good at something specific but I need good quality video with as much features as possible. Im sure they all capture fine images....

first thing fist

Ax series = full frame
axxxx series = APS-C aka crop

A6300 is newest Sony camera, and A6300 does NOT do 120fps at 4k, it does 30fps, no consumer device will record 120fps at 4k, at this point 120fps at 4k is not even possible, due to HDMI 2.0 limitation, when cable is limited to 60hz. DisplayPort 1.4 can 120hz in 4k, but that a computer thing, not used in consumer A/V or camera stuff.

Anyway back to Cameras
Ax series have 6 cameras right now.
In order of release
a7
a7R
a7S
a7II
a7RII
a7SII

with your budget, you can only consider A7, A7r, and A6300, but you need to decide if you want full frame or APS-C. I personally wouldn't buy A7R (again), I had that camera before, it only has contract detect and autofocusing was slower and shutter is known to cause shutter shock.

try to decide between a7 and A6300, if you stretch the budget a bit, maybe even a7II

That clears up a lot of things.

What other known issues are out there?? What about shutter count.....is it different from canons? Does it even work the same way??

Also with an adapter would a sony full frame be compatible with regular canon lenses?

Sorry I have too many questions

i'm not sure about other cameras but a7Rii has a shutter life of 500k.

and yes, Canon lenses will autofocus on Sony cameras but....

There are many different adapters.... and they work differently.

1) there are many cheap adapters in range of 100-150 bucks.
Those can't be updated, so don't buy a old one
They will autofocus on all newer cameras, on A7, A7r autofocus will be VERY SLOW, on a7II and a7RII (maybe a6300) focus will be fast
on the cheap adapters lens compatibility really varies per adapter per generation per lens.

2) Metabones, the best of the best, pricy at $400
works with virtually every AF Canon, Tamron, Sigma, Tokina lens in EF mount
Can be updated to add features, more lens compatibility.

3) Sigma MC-11, priced at $250
For Sigma A, S and C lenses in Canon EF or Sigma SA mounts.
Will give native AF modes for those lenses, but it can also work with other lenses like none-A, S, C sigma lenses, Canon lenses in Phase detect mode only.
In native mode with correct glass will have fast AF on Ax and A6000, A6300 cameras
With other lenses will have fast phase detect with A7II, A7RII and A6300 only, slow AF with others.

one more thing

Flange Distance, Sony E mount has 18mm flange distance.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flange_focal_distance (external link)

Virtually any lens with flange distance LONGER then 18mm can theoretically be mounted on Sony camera and used on Sony camera.

As long as someone makes an adapter for it.

Dumb adapter are cheap, its just a metal tube that mounts the lens on a camera, everything becomes manaul.

Smart adapters, will communicate with camera and depending on adapter they will transfer EXIF info, control iris and more.

Smart adapters are available for following mounts:
Canon EF - many many options
Nikon F - something that just started very recently
Contax G - one company made an adapter
Leica M - something really new, a Smart adapter that can Autofocus Leica lenses by moving them front and back, Even Leica cameras can't Autofocus M mount cameras.
Sony A - Sony makes their own adapters for A mount
