If you are running a Wordpress photo website, can I request that you post a link? Also, if you could write a few words about the pros and cons of using Wordpress, it would be greatly appreciated.

I do NOT want to copy anyone. Far from it. I just want to see what's out there and see what kinds of things some do with a Wordpress-backed site.

I will be leaving Zenfolio (currently www.iowa-photo.com (external link) for anyone who is interested) before the end of this month as I have been very unsatisfied with them. I resurrected my older "classic" website ( www.iowalandscapephotography.com (external link) ), and I like my classic site well enough, but I'd like to freshen it up a bit, and also see if I can bring a couple features into the 21st century, i.e. a Contact Us form instead of email, etc. I have my blog using Wordpress and am thinking of combining my blog and website together. They are currently separate, though linked.

I am not afraid to learn new things... shoot, I built my own html site... but at the same time I do not desire to be Mr Coding Guru, either.

Thanks.

I do have a Wordpress website. Based on my experience, you'll still need to do some coding or have someone do it for you in order to properly implement the customisations you might need. Whilst there are tons of free themes, hardly any will suit what you want right off the bat: you'll need to edit files and/or install plugins to enhance the experience, add functionality, make the colours and design consistent with your branding, have attractive instead of ho-hum run-of-the-mill galleries, remove "theme designed by XYZ" text, &c., &c.

Be prepared to pay for nice gallery plugins. I'm currently using Envira, in its Bronze (I think) tier; it works alright, but its free version sux (not surprising). And be prepared for many things and plugins to be by subscription nowadays.

As for the blog, I'd keep it in a separate section, even with its own subdomain: it makes it easier to keep the main site clean. Then again, if one of your marketing strategies is to have frequent new blog posts, then it's better to keep the blog on the same domain.

Using a Themegoods theme. Great support from the theme provider. It's still a work n progress. If you have any questions let me know.

Alveric, how do you find the ENVIRA plugin for resource usage? I had just purchased and returned Photocrati because the bundled Nextgen gallery plugin brought my shared hosting to its knees. I'm using a Themegoods WP theme now but am not too impressed with the gallery implementation.

Well, I'm not very good at gauging speeds, and I usually don't bother with the stats and other tools. To me it loaded just fine when I was in shared hosting (I'm on a VPS now). I do notice a bit of a lag when loading the gallery page and sorting the pictures. You might want to see for yourself: http://www.diamantstudios.ca/ (external link)

I chucked Photocrati/NextGen: it got buggy and their support department never could suss out the cause of the bug and thus never fixed it.

Photocrati theme and quite a bit of customizing. Overall I am really happy with it. Got pretty much the exact look I was going for.

Long time user of Wordpress and like it a lot. My current site http://www.danmarchant.com (external link) is old and I am actually in the middle of building a new one on my local test server.

The current one uses photocrati - but that is basically no longer being developed. The developers switched to developing themes based on the Genesis framework (as well as focusing on Next Gen Gallery/Pro and web hosting). I liked Photocrati as it was very easy to customise (with no programming knowledge at all) but their new themes have lost that so they are far less attractive to me.

My new site will be using one of the themegoods themes teamed with Woocommerce.

I use Photocrati & Nextgen Pro, heavily customized after a long learning curve. Still a work in progress, my greatest layout issue is how to handle access to multiple galleries.

The best part about Wordpress is increased control (after a long learning curve if WP isn't your day job). The downside is that, at least for me I've had to stitch a few plugins into the main theme to gain the functionality I want and there's often compatibility issues to overcome.

Despite the hassle it's been fun. If you have the time to play and get things right I'd say go with Wordpress. If you can't live with occasional downtime and need a completely reliable commerce site then one of the paid services may be better for you.

I like your site, and it has a lot of aspects that I tend to like... the left sidebar that stays in place, the three column appearance, etc.

I'm getting the gist that if I really want what I want then I'm going to have to get more into customization. Which I have no doubt I can do... I did it with my html site... was just thinking Wordpress would be, well, lazier, if you will. One of the alleged selling points of Wordpress is that supposedly everything is already done for you... but obviously only if you want basics and "cookie cutter". Alas, the good stuff never is lazy, and I know that.

Thanks, the three column thing is a customization I had to do myself but thanks to Wordpress and its numerous plugins it was easy.

I think Wordpress is lazier.... in that it automates a huge amount of grunt work. The days of having to update the design on every html page are long gone. Change a font or a colour in Wordpress and it is deployed site-wide, activate a new theme and the entire site changes.

There are lots of good themes out there and I am sure many people use them straight off the shelf. The problem is that photographers are visual artists. Little details are important to us and we all have our individual tastes so we want to alter the font or the colour or the layout of images.

There are also lots of good plugins that add functionality, including page builder plugins that allow you to drag n drop build/design custom page layouts, add contact page, add..... whatever.
