I remember back several years ago when a member here was doing Timescape with astronomy . Best I ever seen ! Here is a link to his Vimeo video : https://vimeo.com/42785517 (external link) . When you watch it you can see why I prefer images that look like night shots and not daytime shots like a lot are producing now .

That's beautiful! I still do occasionally see people doing those (elsewhere -- not posted to POTN).

The equipment is a bit more sophisticated because it's usually at least two axes of movement. I've seen a single-axis head mounted to a motorized slider. Losmandy supports attaching two StarLapse systems together so that they work as a camera-motion system (sort of like having an RA/Dec axis on a GEM telescope mount except each with more control over tracking speed than a go-to telescope mount typically has.)

This is something that is probably better suited to people who have more ready-access to dark-skies. I'd love to do this, but I work full time and can only manage to get away to a dark sky site perhaps once per year (twice if I'm lucky) and on those occasions I tend to want to spend as much time possible doing deep-space imaging of objects that would just be too difficult to image locations closer to home. In other words... I don't know where I'd find the time -- even though I do think the time-lapse sequences are gorgeous.

Mainly I just posted it for inspiration for new comers and old... to take night time images . Also too so some can see the real beauty of images that look like night time instead of daytime . I guess those daytime astro pictures have a place for some but not for me . This film shows real night time beauty except when sun starts coming up or there is a full moon rising . I already knew of the equipment required and of course that's another direction of this hobby with more expense . I saw a video before , maybe from the same person who made the above video showed his rigs and how they operated and it's really cool , only thing is it's a loooonng process to stack thousands of images to come out with a beauty like the one above . Working full time on it takes about a month or more .

Some of the guys talk about what it takes to do this.... and never mind the camera motion control gear ... just thinking through the exposures that will be needed as you start in daylight and darkness starts to take over... and then back to daylight again -- and capturing and processing it all so seamlessly that nobody really notices the exposure changes seems challenging on its own.

Lovely stuff.

I actually picked up a very inexpensive head to try to do timelapse (starting with terrestrial/day) just to practice, as I'm already not good at devoting a lot of processing time to begin with. But, when I do have some more day time stuff that I'm not birding with or doing other things, I'd love to at least start with practicing with time lapse sunsets and the like. Or at least just clouds.

One day stars... but that's one day for me!

Very best,

I've always been fascinated with time lapse, have done a number of daytime ones with a static camera. I recently invested in a Dynamic Perception motorized 3 axis slider. My testing / learning around the yard is going well and I am planning on some Milky Way TLs for next season.

I also backed The VIEW intervalometer (external link) on Kickstarter, an auto ramping device to make the sunrise / sunset transitions simple. It also offers a real time preview of how your time lapse looks, and integrates with the DP slider's control unit.

In searching POTN, there aren't many threads about TL, so I've been spending time going through a couple of TL dedicated forums, but they just aren't that active. Maybe we should start an "official" TL thread on POTN so members interested in this can share ideas / techniques, etc.
