Standard definition vs high def video on a phone - much difference?

T-Mobile is releasing an unlimited data plan Sept 6. Sprint also has a similar plan.

The drawback is that the video will be standard definition instead of high def.

I'm looking to buy the new Note 7 phone. Since a phone has a small screen, is there
really much difference in IQ between standard & high def video?
I don't see myself watching movies on the phone, so perhaps standard def will be ok.

I'm on T-Mobile. I stream Netflix/Youtube as well as Apple Music daily. The video and music are apparently downgraded to a lesser quality, but I honestly can't tell. However, I am viewing videos on my iphone 6s with a 4.7" screen vs. the Note 7's 5.7" screen. Would the extra inch make a difference? I doubt it. You should go to a store and test it out.

Ok perhaps I take that back; maybe you can notice the IQ. here's some screen shots of T mobile 480p streaming on a 4.7" screen. I personally don't have an issue with it but pixel peepers may.

Those shots look decent. Most likely the standard def will work for me, especially since
I doubt I'll be watching many movies.

I have T-Mobile on my el-cheapo cell phone, so if I continue with them I can use my same number.
But T-Mobile charges extra if the phone is used as a hot spot.

Sprint, however, doesn't charge for the hot spot feature. 5GB of hot spot use at no extra cost.

Lots to consider!

You can port your number to Sprint if maintaining your number is important to you.

Also, I would check on coverage and data speeds in your area. Where I'm at, Sprint is terrible in both.
