Hello all,

I'm having a "grass is greener" moment and considering selling my Canon equipment in favor of Nikon. I currently have the 6D with grip, 24-70 f/2.8 mkII, and 600ex-rt flash. My kit is relatively small and I wouldn't find it difficult to start with Nikon. I am considering the following:

  • Used Nikon D810 w/Nikkor 24-70 (non VR)
  • New Nikon D500 w/Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 A and other lenses

The reason why I'm considering the D500 is because of the awesome new touch screen, but am hesitant of going from full frame to crop. The D750 is out because I'm looking for the equivalent of a 5D mkIII and like what the D810 has to offer.

My main uses for the camera would be:
  • Kids, they do dance now and will be getting into sports soon enough
  • Events (parties, weddings, etc.)
  • Video (I know the D500 does 4K which is another reason why I'm considering it)

I've added a poll and want to hear your feedback. Thank you!

Personally, as an owner of the D5 and D750, I think you are doing yourself a disservice to not look at the D750. My personal opinion is that it is closer to the 5D3 than either of the two you mentioned.

Yes, I realized that after posting. 5DS/5DSR = (ish) to D810 and D750 slots in between 5D mkIII and 6D. I do like the tilt screen and wifi. Though it seems really awesome on the new D500

I have the D800 (I know not quite the D810) and the D500. In my opinion if the kids are going to be doing sports soon go with the D500. Its a better all round body. The D800 series is great but the frame rate and buffer are a little light for quick moving action. Also the AF module in the D500 is the same as the D5 its brilliant.

The D500 has got so many great things going for it! Though I don't know if I can "go back" to crop. I've shot so long on a full frame with the 24-70 that I fear going to crop would be hard. The Sigma Art line makes it enticing, but not sure if it would be the same as my 24-70 L mkII.

That is a question only you can answer. Maybe you need to look at renting each of the bodies and see how they go.

I just got an announcement today from Adorama. The Canon 5D MIV is out. Might want to add that to your decision "mix".

Considering its pretty much on par with the D810 spec wise if you are invested in Canon glass this would make more sense.

I like Canon glass better than Nikon glass, and do really like the specialty lenses like the 85mm f/1.2 L mkII. Unfortunately at $3500, the 5D mkIV is a bit out of my current price range. I think for now I'm going to play a wait and see game.

Canon is made in Japan, the colors are fantastic and I have gone the other way and not regretted it. 6D and 24-70? Save your money!

6d does not address great servo mode or video (w/ auto focus).

Taking video with a DSLR usually requires post process work to even make it resemble what you'd get with an androi/iphone HD video. Keep that in mind because you'll need additional external mics, video head, tripod, and possible stabilizers to hold the camera etc etc. How deep do you want to go into video????

Just remember your camera is simply a tool. You can always add additional tools to your tool box :)

I went a different approach in gear. I bought the 80d. Is it perfect??? Heck no!!! With careful manipulation in LR you can make the images quite nice but no D810 or 6D IQ. What it has is a decent buffer to take casual photos of your kids in sports and it will excel in autofocus in Video mode due to DPAF. How is the ISO ??? adequate but nothing to brag about even with the higher dynamic range of the new sensor. The 80D is a compromise in image quality and iso performance but overall it's a decent camera. Once you use the video mode you'll appreciate how incredible Dual Pixel AF works in moving subjects.

Nikon video is getting better I suppose but I would still consider it a still camera (sports and universal use). The D500 is absolutely a crazy beast in performance.

Since your a Canon shooter I'd suggest keeping your 6D and watch the real world reviews of photographers shooting with the brand new Fuji X-T2....your saying What?????

It shoots 4k and so far no complaints of overheating like the sony 6300. Apparently the video AF is decent like the A6300. You can shoot video in the film simulation preset and to my eyes its awesome that can get away with no post processing of video. If you select the tracking properly it'll track running kids easy, high iso performance puts the Canon 7dmk2 and 80d to severe shame!! Mirrorless system in the fuji world provides CRAZY tack sharp images and I have no complaints of soft images in any range in a zoom. The 18-55 kit lens surpasses the 24-70Lmk1, 24-105L f/4 mk1 easily. For $1900USD you can have a x-t2 with 18-55 kit lens and be prepared to be shocked!!! $599 USD for a 55-200 is cheap and it's easily on par with a 70-200 f/4IS and f/2.8IS mk1 (tad more dof of course due to crop sensor). Put a body/battery grip and have full confidence shooting a wedding with all the battery juice you need.

Why didn't I buy a X-T2 instead of an 80D ?? good question :) I wanted DPAF and I'll have to say it's absolutely fantastic. I am taking a hit on IQ and ISO performance. I will be buying an x-t2 very soon as well........

I'm starting to invest alot into Fuji. The IQ is so close to Canon full frame territory. Stupidly light so you'll feel like taking it everywhere. I'll take my fuji bodies with 16mm (24mm equiv) before even touching my 5d3 or any canon gear. Lately I've been forcing myself to grab the 80D to familiarize myself with the new body. I appreciate the 16mm image quality over my 80D with canon 24Lmk2.

If you decide to go Nikon I'd say start with the D500 and then pickup a D810 down the road. For me I approach gear with heavier canon dslr and ultra portable Fuji as a secondary...best thing I've ever done. If your into punchier files Fuji is not for you and you should look at sony for small mirrorless. Now that the X-t2 is out I will not consider sony...but that's me......

old thread, but ...

i shoot with a 6D for my own stuff and with a Nikon 750 at my "real" job. Sure the Nikon files have some more latitude, but honestly i have not found it game changing. While the Nikon zoom we often use is not the best example, it is awful. Quite literally the worst glass I have ever seen. I've had two 18-55 Canon kit lenses and those look like L glass in comparison.

Still find the Nikon interface a little clunky in comparison.

As I've always felt, if you have one or the other I'm sure you're going to be just fine, I don't think it's worth any effort (time and money) to switch.
