I just ordered one of these on Amazon. I owned the Canon 2x III a couple of years ago and wasn't satisfied with the sharpness, even with the newest version. I was planning on getting a Canon 1.4x III but found this & thought I would give it a try. I'll try to get some pics posted on Friday or Saturday. I'm an amateur, so don't expect anything amazing. ;-)a

Had no idea they make one. They even copy the bone white color LOL!

Be interested on your take since B&H has no reviews yet and it is a 2-3 week special order.

Interesting. It has the same lens compatabity as the Canon one so complete copy? I get how they can sell the 35/2 and 50/1.8 since those have expired patents, but the 1.4 TC III is not that old.

At any rate, I wonder why B&H isn't stocking it? Or is it too new?

They've had the 2x out for some time but I believe that the 1.4x is fairly new. I ordered it this morning on Amazon & got free one day delivery, so I should have it by late afternoon.

Generally speaking a 1.4X teleconvertor will not magnify a lens' inherent flaws to the same degree as a 2X teleconvertor does.

So while folks generally don't hesitate much to buy 1.4X, most do not buy a 2X.

No doubt, Wilt. That 2X converter with both my 300mm f2.8L IS USM and my 70-200 2.8 IS II USM made it crystal clear that those lenses were optimized and 2X extender was just too much for the design of those specific lenses. 1.4X, on the other hand, should be a bit more forgiving since it's not pushing the lenses as far beyond their original design.

I took a few quick shots with the 1.4x teleconverter and my 1DMKV w/ 70-200 f2.8l is II usm. I let my dogs out in the back and used AI focusing to see how well it would focus in a mild, action environment. It did quite well for a simple, initial test. I'll try some shots tonight at the TX Rangers/Cleveland Indians game to see how it does there, although I'll be taking from about 20 rows up on over the visitors dugout, so it may not really tell us much. That's assuming that they'll let me bring my camera in the ballpark. I took it up once before with no problems, but it probably depends on the bag checker. BTW, my German Shorthaired Pointer had some leg surgery so she's wearing the "cone of shame" in the pics, not ideal but funny nonetheless.

Surprised that the 2 x Mk3 didn't work well with your 300 F2.8 L IS (I don't have the 70-200 Mk2). It works remarkably well with mine. True it does need decent light and AF, whilst accurate, is not the fastest - though reasonably good. This combination stacked up very well (IQ wise) against my (then) Canon 600 F4 L IS in decent light, though (naturally) it lagged behind in poorer conditions.

When comparing we used a 1DX, 1D4 and 7D2. A friend turned up while we were playing so we threw his Canon 300 F2.8 L IS Mk2 into the mix as well. The 300 Mk2 was very marginally better but not enough to justify the extra cost even with the 2 x extender where it is supposed to show it's greatest improvement over the Mk1.

As an aside I find the 300 F2.8 L IS and Canon 2 x Mk3 an excellent set up for smaller aircraft at Airshows on my 1DX or with the 1.4 Mk3 on my 7D2.

Sorry yours doesn't perform - calibration perhaps?

My 70-200/2.8 IS v2 worked noticeably better alone and with Canon's v3 teleconverters after it was calibrated by Canon.

I'm thinking that calibration was probably what was needed but I didn't have enough experience at the time to realize that was a possibility. I had to sell my 300 as well shortly after selling the 2x since I'm simply an over zealous amateur and I had been laid off at the time. I didn't really need the lens & I just couldn't justify keeping it, as much as I absolutely hated selling it.

I'll go for another one one of these days, but I'll have to make due with my current gear until my last kid finishes college. He's number 5 to go through and has one year to go, so cash flow frees up significantly next spring.

The good news is that I'm pleasantly surprised with the Yongnuo 1.4x and after a little more experimentation, I may spring for the Yongnuo 2x. If I don't like it, it's returnable and I can buy both of these for less than the cost of one of the Canon TCs

I just watched a Rudy Winston video on the 5D4. In it he said you needed the version III TCs to allow f8 focusing on all the points. I am curious to hear once the 5D4s start shipping if the Yongnou allow the f8 focusing
