I'm really hacked off. You guys are getting it for $1099. The dollar equivalent for the same lens here in the UK is $1465. Thats one hell of a rip off.

Buy 6.4 lenses and you have paid for your NHS

It's actually more like $1250 as our prices include 20% VAT whereas the US prices are before tax. I know most in the US don't pay out-of-state taxes but that's a different story.

Curious, why?

While the 70-200 f4IS is an excellent lens I think that some of the newest tech could make it even better
and it is my second most used lens! :)

For you guys that are having your doubts....Think again

Jeff Ascough used the new lens. He Says it is excellent. Prime like sharpness across the frame at F/4, distortion, barreling & vignette issues from previous version are resolved. Take a look for yourself. Just about all images are with the new lens

Mine is on order

Thanks for sharing, Mike. Good to see.

I am on the list at my local retailer.

This lens is on my radar. I'm selling a guitar soon and will probably get a 1D X Mark 2 and a 70-200 f/2.8 II first.

After that, the new 24-105 is next.

Try Ian Kerr at kerso1123@msn.com for a better price. Not sure sure when he's getting them in though

the samples dont look very good, onioning bokeh, shutter speeds too slow? just not the sharpest results. Some look ok, but most poor. I just want to see tests in labs instead.

I'll have to wait to see more, this performance is not what I was hoping to see.

I would have upgraded my MkI if we got better edge to edge sharpness across the range and particularly if there was less distortion, but it looks like barrel distortion wide open is still fairly pronounced.

It's definitely looking like a "I'd replace my MKI if it died" lens, not a "oh crap, that's worth the upgrade" lens.

It's a bummer given how good Canon's latest L zooms have usually been across the board

Poor review in my opinion :-|
Apart from the bias on sharpness with technically flawed crops, the only useful information is that the distortion and vignetting at the wide-end have been only slightly improved.

Disappointing. But let's wait for some competent revews.
