If this release comes up as well as say the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L in terms of sharpness improvements this might be one for me.

I have never owned the current 24-105, but I am thinking it might be a good choice for me over the 24-70II if the image quality is close and it focus's as quickly. Now that I have the 5D4 and with it's much improved high ISO (especially as I haw been using the 7dII for sport stuff ), it means I could get the shutter speed up to compensate for that stop difference from f2.8 to f4.0, and be at f4 which makes life a bit easier.

Plus have a lens that has IS and a slightly more useful focal range. I find with the 24-70 I often want that bit more reach.

The only thing missing in the equation is bokeh, but I am thinking I could get a nice prime with the price difference. Also If i get this I'll keep my old 24-70 2.8 v1. It's a nice lens IMO.

If this is as good as the 24-70 f4 or 16-35 f4, this will be my next lens.

no way a 4x+ zoom will be as good. you're asking too much.

They pulled it off with the new 100-400 . . . so what makes you think that a 4x zoom can't be as good? Do you think that the new 100-400 is lacking in some way? If so, where is it lacking?

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

A 4x tele is easier to design than a 4x ultrawide-to-tele jack-of-all-trades lens.

Medium to super tele with variable aperture is a very different lens. Wide angle to medium tele with constant aperture is another story.

Everything is possible, cost, size and weight are often prohibiting.

I foolishly created a dedicated thread then saw this one. Oops...

I own the current generation 24-105 and it's my least-liked lens in my kit in terms of IQ. But my oh my do I use it a lot simply due to its versatility. The Mark II is supposed to be coming out soon (end of this month?) and I also leave for an extended trip the second week in November - tight timing! I'm really tempted to replace my Mark I with the newer Mark II, but there aren't really any reviews out yet. What do you guys think - worth the upgrade for someone who already owns 24-105?

Hard to say. The only samples I've seen are the badly lit shots from Photokina. I'm hoping its going to be quite a bit sharper than the Mk1. If it is I would consider replacing mine with the Mk2 because 24-105 is the perfect range for me.

Canon is not expected to start shipping this lens to dealers until the 31st of this month (next week). Most dealers will not even get the lens, to start shipping out preorders, until at least a few days into November. I doubt very many people will have this lens in their hands until after the first week of November.

Turns out they were talking out of their butts. Here is the latest from the shop.

Thank you for your patience, I'm sure the wait will be worth it! Your 24-105 L IS II lens is currently making its way to Australia and I've just heard from Canon it should take around 2 more weeks.

So I guess it's on a boat. *sigh*

For one who is sick of his title, I think that would make a worthy replacement!
